Which medical devices companies sponsor F-1 STEM OPT visas in Illinois?
Abbott Laboratories in Abbott Park, Baxter International in Deerfield, and Medline Industries in Northfield are among the larger Illinois-based medical devices employers with established STEM OPT hiring programs. Smaller contract manufacturers and device startups in the Chicago metro also participate, particularly those enrolled in E-Verify, which is a federal requirement for STEM OPT extension sponsorship. Filing history with DOL is one indicator of active sponsorship practice.
Which cities in Illinois have the most medical devices F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship jobs?
The northern Chicago suburbs, including Deerfield, Abbott Park, Northfield, and Waukegan, concentrate a significant share of Illinois medical devices employment due to the headquarters presence of major manufacturers. Chicago itself hosts medical technology firms and hospital-adjacent device companies, particularly in the Fulton Market and Near North Side corridors. Rockford, historically tied to industrial and surgical instrument manufacturing, also has relevant employers for STEM OPT candidates.
What types of medical devices roles typically qualify for F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship?
Roles that qualify are those directly tied to a STEM-designated degree program, such as quality engineering, regulatory affairs, biomedical engineering, R&D, manufacturing engineering, and software development for embedded medical systems. The position must be commensurate with the student's degree field as confirmed by the Designated School Official. General business, sales, or administrative positions within a medical devices company typically do not qualify for the STEM OPT extension even when offered by a STEM-heavy employer.
How do I find medical devices F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate surfaces medical devices employers in Illinois with documented F-1 STEM OPT and visa sponsorship filing history, letting you filter specifically by industry and state rather than sorting through generalist postings. Because E-Verify enrollment is required for STEM OPT extension employers, Migrate Mate's data helps narrow your search to companies that meet this baseline requirement, which is especially useful in Illinois where the medical devices sector spans both large multinationals and smaller device manufacturers.
Are there any Illinois-specific considerations for F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship in medical devices?
Illinois does not impose state-level visa sponsorship requirements beyond federal rules, but medical devices employers in the state frequently require FDA regulatory compliance experience, which intersects with degree requirements for STEM OPT eligibility. Illinois is also an E-Verify voluntary state for private employers generally, meaning E-Verify enrollment is not mandated by state law outside of certain government contracts, so confirming a specific employer's E-Verify status through USCIS records is an important step before accepting a STEM OPT position.
