Which companies sponsor visas for interns in Illinois?
Large Illinois employers with established internship programs and a track record of sponsoring international workers include Boeing, Motorola Solutions, Discover Financial, United Airlines, and Abbott Laboratories. Chicago-based consulting firms and technology companies also regularly hire international interns. Sponsorship is more common at larger organizations with dedicated HR and immigration support infrastructure than at smaller firms.
Which visa types are most common for intern roles in Illinois?
Most international interns in Illinois work under F-1 OPT or CPT authorization, which allows students enrolled at U.S. universities to work without employer-sponsored petitions. For post-graduation internships, F-1 OPT is the primary pathway. J-1 visa exchange visitor visas are also common for structured internship programs sponsored by designated exchange program organizations. H-1B visa sponsorship for internships is rare due to the degree requirement and lottery process.
Which cities in Illinois have the most intern sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the overwhelming majority of intern sponsorship opportunities in Illinois, particularly in the Loop, River North, and Fulton Market districts where technology, finance, and consulting firms are concentrated. Evanston sees internship activity tied to Northwestern University's corporate partnerships. Peoria and Rockford have a smaller presence, primarily through manufacturing and healthcare employers with international hiring programs.
How to find intern visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate filters intern roles in Illinois specifically by visa sponsorship availability, so you're not sorting through positions that won't support international candidates. Search the Illinois intern category on Migrate Mate to see current openings from employers who have indicated sponsorship willingness. Focusing on Chicago-based technology, finance, and consulting firms within the platform tends to surface the highest volume of sponsorship-eligible intern postings.
Are there state-specific considerations for international interns in Illinois?
Illinois has a strong university pipeline, with the University of Chicago, Northwestern, and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign sending large numbers of international students into Chicago-area internships. Illinois does not impose additional state-level visa requirements beyond federal rules. International interns on F-1 CPT or OPT must ensure their program aligns with their field of study, as unauthorized employment can affect future visa eligibility. Consulting an international student office before accepting an offer is advisable.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored intern jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
