Which companies sponsor visas for project managers in Illinois?
Several large employers in Illinois have a documented history of sponsoring work visas for project managers. These include consulting firms like Accenture, Deloitte, and Cognizant, technology companies such as Motorola Solutions and CDW, healthcare organizations including Abbott and Northwestern Medicine, and financial institutions like JPMorgan Chase and Northern Trust. Sponsorship tends to be more common at large enterprise employers than at smaller firms.
Which visa types are most common for project manager roles in Illinois?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa category for project managers in Illinois, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as business, engineering, or information technology. L-1B and L-1A visas apply when a candidate is transferring from an overseas office of the same employer. Canadians and Mexicans may also qualify for TN visa status under the USMCA, though the project manager classification under TN has historically faced scrutiny and is not straightforward.
Which cities in Illinois have the most project manager sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the overwhelming majority of sponsored project manager positions in Illinois, driven by its density of corporate headquarters, consulting firms, and technology companies. Suburbs including Deerfield, Abbott Park, and Schaumburg also have notable concentrations of large employers that sponsor. Outside the metro area, sponsorship opportunities for project managers are significantly more limited, as smaller regional employers are less likely to navigate the sponsorship process.
How to find project manager visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate aggregates project manager roles in Illinois where employers have indicated visa sponsorship availability, making it easier to filter out positions that won't work for international candidates. Because project manager is a broad title, searching across variations like IT project manager, program manager, and technical project manager on Migrate Mate can surface a wider range of relevant Illinois postings. Focusing on employers with a history of H-1B filings in the state improves your odds of a productive application process.
Are there any Illinois-specific considerations for project manager sponsorship?
Illinois does not impose state-level restrictions on employer sponsorship, but the concentration of staffing and consulting firms in Chicago is worth noting. Some staffing agencies place project managers at third-party client sites, which can complicate H-1B petitions due to USCIS requirements around specialty occupation documentation and itinerary. Project managers pursuing sponsorship through a direct employer rather than a staffing intermediary generally face a more predictable petition process. Illinois also has several large universities that produce project management graduates, creating competitive candidate pools at sponsoring firms.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored project manager jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
