Which companies sponsor visas for social workers in Illinois?
Hospitals and health systems are the most active sponsors, with Advocate Aurora Health, Sinai Health System, Rush University Medical Center, and the University of Chicago Medical Center regularly filing H-1B petitions for licensed clinical social workers. The Illinois Department of Human Services and large nonprofit behavioral health agencies also sponsor, though less frequently than hospital systems. Employers in federally qualified health centers often pursue EB-3 sponsorship for direct service roles.
Which visa types are most common for social work roles in Illinois?
The H-1B is the most common visa for licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) in Illinois, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a master's degree in social work. The EB-3 employment-based green card is a common permanent pathway, particularly for hospital-employed social workers. Some positions in underserved communities may qualify for Conrad 30 J-1 waivers, though that pathway is more common for physicians than social workers.
Which cities in Illinois have the most social work sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the largest share of sponsored social work positions in Illinois, driven by its concentration of major hospital systems, federally qualified health centers, and nonprofit behavioral health organizations. Rockford and Springfield also have active hiring, particularly through regional hospital networks and state agency offices. Aurora and Peoria see demand through community mental health centers and school district programs serving large immigrant and refugee populations.
How to find social work visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find social work visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois, with listings filtered specifically to roles where employers have demonstrated sponsorship willingness. Because sponsorship availability is rarely listed explicitly in job postings, Migrate Mate's filtering saves significant time compared to sorting through general job boards. Focus your search on clinical, behavioral health, and school social work roles in the Chicago metro, which has the highest concentration of sponsoring employers.
What should international social workers know before applying for jobs in Illinois?
Illinois requires a state-issued license to practice social work, and the licensure tier depends on your degree and supervised experience. An LCSW requires a master's degree in social work plus post-graduate supervised clinical hours, and employers sponsoring H-1B visas typically require you to hold or be eligible for Illinois licensure before they file a petition. International candidates should confirm their degree is from a CSWE-accredited program or obtain an equivalency evaluation, as Illinois licensing boards assess foreign credentials on a case-by-case basis.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored social work jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
