Which companies sponsor visas for social workers in Minnesota?
The most active visa sponsors for social work roles in Minnesota include large health systems such as Allina Health, Fairview Health Services, and M Health Fairview, along with county-level human services agencies like Hennepin County and Ramsey County. Nonprofit providers including Canvas Health and People Incorporated also hire internationally for licensed clinical social worker and case management positions.
Which visa types are most common for social work roles in Minnesota?
The H-1B is the most common visa for licensed clinical social workers, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at minimum a master's degree in social work. Some nonprofit and government-affiliated employers hold cap-exempt status, which allows H-1B petitions year-round without entering the annual lottery. The J-1 visa is also used for supervised clinical training placements at qualifying institutions.
Which cities in Minnesota have the most social work sponsorship jobs?
Minneapolis and Saint Paul together account for the large majority of visa-sponsored social work positions in Minnesota, driven by the concentration of hospitals, county agencies, and nonprofit behavioral health organizations in the metro area. Rochester sees demand tied to Mayo Clinic and affiliated providers. Duluth has a smaller but consistent market, particularly for social workers serving rural and Indigenous communities in northeastern Minnesota.
How to find social work visa sponsorship jobs in Minnesota?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters social work roles in Minnesota by visa sponsorship status, so you are not sorting through listings that do not apply to you. Search by role type, such as clinical social worker or case manager, and filter to Minnesota to see which employers are actively hiring sponsored candidates. Positions at cap-exempt health systems and nonprofits are worth prioritizing.
Are there state-specific considerations for international social workers seeking jobs in Minnesota?
Minnesota requires independent licensure through the Board of Social Work, and international applicants must have their foreign credentials evaluated for equivalency before a license is issued. A master's degree in social work from a CSWE-accredited program is generally required for clinical roles that qualify for H-1B sponsorship. Some employers will sponsor before licensure is complete but expect candidates to obtain their Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker credential within a defined timeframe.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored social work jobs in Minnesota?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
