Position Summary
The internal tax group is responsible for the firm’s tax matters. As the International Tax Manager, you will oversee aspects of the firm’s U.S. tax compliance and tax provision processes while coordinating closely with Grant Thornton member firms around the world. You’ll work directly with senior leadership and collaborate with teams across multiple jurisdictions to ensure the firm meets its tax obligations, maintains a strong control environment, and executes high‑quality tax reporting in a consistent, efficient, and globally aligned manner. This role requires handling highly confidential information related to the firm and its partners, and maintaining strict confidentiality is essential.
From the start, you’ll have access to formal training, on‑the‑job learning, and deep technical resources across the Grant Thornton network, helping you build a broad and sophisticated skill set that strengthens both your technical expertise and your business acumen. Success in this role also comes from showing genuine enthusiasm for learning, growing, and supporting teammates — including those focused on Federal, state, and other tax areas — to help elevate the entire tax function.
Your day-to-day may include:
- Managing the firm’s U.S. tax compliance and tax provision processes, including internal tax positions, filing requirements, and co-sourced engagements supporting provision and compliance needs
- Planning and executing U.S. tax projects while coordinating with global member firms to ensure alignment on cross‑border tax matters
- Advising on the U.S. tax implications of international operations, including the interaction of U.S. and foreign tax rules to support efficient global tax strategies via transfer pricing and capital structures, among others
- Reviewing complex U.S. tax returns and related workpapers to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to quality standards
- Collaborating with partners, managers, and teams across the network, demonstrating a desire to learn from others and proactively support colleagues working in Federal, state, and other tax disciplines
- Performing additional responsibilities as needed to support the firm’s tax function and global coordination efforts
You have the following technical skills and qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting
- Minimum five to seven years of progressive tax consulting experience, preferably with at least three years focused on international taxation
- Experience with a large accounting firm, law firm, or corporate tax department of a multinational company
- CPA or JD/active law license required
- Excellent analytical, technical, and tax accounting/technology skills with proficiency in U.S. tax compliance and consulting
- Strong computer expertise including knowledge of tax software and technology
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Can travel as needed
COMPENSATION
The base salary range for this position is between $104,000 and $156,000. Placement within the pay range is at Grant Thornton’s discretion, and it is based on multiple factors, including but not limited to, job-related knowledge/skills, experience, business needs, progression within the role, geographic location, and internal equity. At Grant Thornton, compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.

Which companies sponsor visas for tax managers in Illinois?
Chicago-based employers with consistent H-1B visa sponsorship records for tax managers include Deloitte, KPMG, PwC, Ernst & Young, Grant Thornton, Hyatt Hotels, United Airlines, Exelon, and Morningstar. Large regional accounting firms and multinational corporations with Illinois headquarters also sponsor regularly. Public accounting firms tend to have established immigration support infrastructure, making them more predictable sponsors than smaller regional firms.
Which visa types are most common for tax manager roles in Illinois?
The H-1B is the most common visa for tax managers in Illinois, as the role qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. CPA credentials strengthen the petition. Candidates already holding TN visa status (Canadian or Mexican nationals) or L-1 visa transfers from multinational employers are also common pathways seen in Illinois corporate and public accounting hiring.
Which cities in Illinois have the most tax manager sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the overwhelming majority of tax manager sponsorship opportunities in Illinois, driven by its concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters, Big Four offices, and regional accounting firms. The downtown Loop and River North areas are particularly dense with professional services employers. Suburban markets like Schaumburg, Oak Brook, and Deerfield also have sponsoring employers, primarily large corporations with significant finance and tax functions.
How to find tax manager visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, so you can search tax manager roles in Illinois without sorting through positions that don't support international candidates. The platform surfaces openings at employers with active sponsorship histories in accounting and tax. Focusing your search on Chicago and its northern suburbs will return the highest volume of relevant sponsored tax manager postings.
Are there any Illinois-specific considerations for tax manager visa sponsorship?
Illinois employers filing H-1B petitions for tax managers must meet Department of Labor prevailing wage requirements for the Chicago metropolitan statistical area, which are typically benchmarked at senior professional levels for manager-grade roles. The Chicago area's deep pipeline of graduate accounting programs at University of Illinois, DePaul, and Northwestern also means employers are familiar with hiring internationally credentialed candidates and navigating Optional Practical Training to H-1B transitions.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored tax manager jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
