Which companies sponsor visas for backend software developers in Kansas?
Oracle Health (formerly Cerner) in Kansas City is among the most active sponsors for backend software developers in Kansas, alongside Garmin, which maintains significant engineering operations in Olathe. T-Mobile's regional presence and mid-size fintech and healthcare IT firms in the Kansas City metro also have H-1B sponsorship histories. Sponsorship activity is concentrated in the northeastern corner of the state.
Which visa types are most common for backend software developer roles in Kansas?
The H-1B is the most common visa for backend software developers in Kansas, as these roles typically qualify as specialty occupations requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. Some developers at multinational firms may be eligible for L-1B visas if transferring from a foreign affiliated office. Candidates with Canadian or Mexican citizenship may also explore the TN visa under the software engineer category.
Which cities in Kansas have the most backend software developer sponsorship jobs?
The Kansas City metro, spanning both Kansas and Missouri, is by far the strongest market for backend software developer sponsorship in Kansas. Overland Park and Olathe within the Kansas side of the metro are particularly active, home to Garmin's headquarters and numerous technology firms. Wichita is a secondary market, primarily in aerospace-adjacent software roles. Lawrence sees some activity tied to the University of Kansas research ecosystem.
How to find backend software developer visa sponsorship jobs in Kansas?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for visa sponsorship, making it straightforward to browse backend software developer roles in Kansas without sorting through positions that don't support international candidates. Searching by state on Migrate Mate surfaces active openings from Kansas employers with documented sponsorship willingness, particularly in the Kansas City metro where demand for backend engineers is highest.
Are there any state-specific considerations for backend software developers seeking sponsorship in Kansas?
Kansas employers sponsoring H-1B workers for backend developer roles must meet Department of Labor prevailing wage requirements, which are benchmarked to the Wichita or Kansas City metropolitan statistical areas depending on job location. Kansas City metro wages tend to be higher than statewide averages, affecting what employers must offer. The University of Kansas and Kansas State University produce international graduates on OPT who often pursue local sponsorship, creating a competitive but active entry-level pipeline in the region.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored backend software developer jobs in Kansas?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
