Which companies sponsor visas for physicians in Kentucky?
The largest physician visa sponsors in Kentucky are major health systems: University of Kentucky HealthCare, University of Louisville Health, Norton Healthcare, Baptist Health, and Appalachian Regional Healthcare. Academic medical centers tend to sponsor more frequently because they're cap-exempt H-1B visa employers. Community health centers (FQHCs) across rural Kentucky also sponsor physicians, often through J-1 visa waiver programs tied to underserved area placements.
Which visa types are most common for physician roles in Kentucky?
J-1 waiver and H-1B are the two dominant visa types for physicians in Kentucky. Many international medical graduates complete residency or fellowship on J-1 status, then obtain a Conrad 30 waiver by committing to serve in a designated shortage area for three years. H-1B is common for hospital-employed physicians at cap-exempt institutions. O-1 visa applies occasionally for physicians with nationally recognized research or clinical distinction.
Which cities in Kentucky have the most physician sponsorship jobs?
Louisville and Lexington account for the largest share of physician sponsorship openings, driven by their academic medical centers and large regional hospital networks. Bowling Green, Owensboro, and Paducah have secondary markets with regional hospital employers. Notably, rural areas across eastern and western Kentucky generate steady demand through J-1 Conrad 30 waiver placements targeting Health Professional Shortage Areas, which can be an accessible entry point for international physicians.
How to find physician visa sponsorship jobs in Kentucky?
Migrate Mate filters physician job listings specifically by visa sponsorship status, so you can search Kentucky openings without sorting through roles that don't sponsor. The platform covers positions at Kentucky's major health systems and includes community health and rural placements where J-1 waiver slots are common. Filtering by role type and region on Migrate Mate helps narrow quickly to Kentucky physicians jobs with confirmed sponsorship.
Are there state-specific considerations for physicians seeking sponsorship in Kentucky?
Kentucky participates in the Conrad 30 J-1 waiver program, which allows each state to request up to 30 waivers annually for physicians who agree to practice in underserved areas for three years. Kentucky's high proportion of rural Health Professional Shortage Areas makes these waivers relatively accessible compared to more urban states. Physicians should also be aware that Kentucky medical licensure requirements apply independently of visa approval, and both processes run concurrently.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored physician jobs in Kentucky?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
