Which companies sponsor visas for physicians in Tennessee?
Tennessee's largest physician visa sponsors include Vanderbilt University Medical Center, University of Tennessee Medical Center, Erlanger Health System in Chattanooga, and Regional One Health in Memphis. Community Health Systems, headquartered in Franklin, also sponsors physicians across its Tennessee hospital network. Academic medical centers and federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) are among the most consistent sponsors, as they regularly recruit internationally trained physicians for both clinical and research roles.
Which visa types are most common for physician roles in Tennessee?
The J-1 and H-1B are the two most common visa types for physicians in Tennessee. J-1 is widely used for residency and fellowship training, though it carries a two-year home residency requirement that can be waived through programs like the Conrad 30 waiver, which Tennessee participates in. H-1B is the primary option for attending physician roles after training. Some physicians in underserved areas also pursue O-1 visas based on exceptional ability.
Which cities in Tennessee have the most physician sponsorship jobs?
Nashville leads Tennessee for physician sponsorship activity, driven by Vanderbilt University Medical Center, HCA Healthcare's corporate presence, and a large concentration of private practices. Memphis follows closely, anchored by University of Tennessee Health Science Center and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Knoxville and Chattanooga also have active physician hiring through their regional health systems. Rural areas across Middle and West Tennessee see demand specifically for primary care and psychiatry roles tied to Conrad 30 waiver placements.
How to find physician visa sponsorship jobs in Tennessee?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international physicians seeking visa sponsorship in Tennessee. You can filter by role and state to see active physician openings at employers with documented sponsorship history, covering positions across Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville, and rural areas. Because sponsorship willingness varies significantly by employer and specialty, using a targeted platform like Migrate Mate saves time compared to sorting through general job postings where sponsorship status is often unlisted.
Are there any Tennessee-specific considerations for physician visa sponsorship?
Tennessee's Conrad 30 waiver program is a key pathway for J-1 physicians, placing them in health professional shortage areas (HPSAs) across the state in exchange for waiving the two-year home residency requirement. Tennessee typically allocates most of its 30 annual Conrad slots to primary care and psychiatry. Physicians should also be aware that Tennessee has no state income tax on wages, which is a practical consideration when evaluating compensation packages relative to other states.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored physician jobs in Tennessee?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
