Which companies sponsor visas for physicians in Illinois?
Northwestern Medicine, Rush University Medical Center, University of Chicago Medicine, Advocate Health Care, and OSF HealthCare are among the most active physician visa sponsors in Illinois. These large academic and integrated health systems regularly sponsor H-1B visa and J-1 visa waiver positions, particularly for hospitalists, primary care physicians, and specialists in underserved communities across the state.
Which visa types are most common for physician roles in Illinois?
H-1B and J-1 are the most common visa types for physicians in Illinois. J-1 Conrad 30 waivers are widely used, requiring a three-year service commitment at a medically underserved facility in Illinois. H-1B sponsorship is common at academic medical centers and large health systems. Physicians with Canadian or Mexican citizenship may also qualify under TN visa status for certain clinical roles.
Which cities in Illinois have the most physician sponsorship jobs?
Chicago has by far the highest concentration of sponsored physician positions in Illinois, driven by its academic medical centers and large hospital networks. Rockford, Peoria, Springfield, and the Metro East region near St. Louis also have notable demand, particularly for J-1 Conrad 30 waiver candidates willing to serve in Health Professional Shortage Areas and Medically Underserved Areas throughout rural and underserved parts of the state.
How to find physician visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate is a job board built specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship in the U.S. You can filter directly for physician roles in Illinois to see active positions from employers who sponsor visas. This saves considerable time compared to manually screening postings, since each listing is matched to sponsorship-willing employers, which is particularly useful given how varied sponsorship willingness is across Illinois health systems.
Are there state-specific considerations for physicians seeking sponsorship in Illinois?
Illinois participates in the Conrad 30 J-1 waiver program, which allocates 30 waiver slots per year for foreign national physicians who agree to work in underserved areas. The Illinois Department of Public Health oversees the Conrad 30 program, and slots are competitive. Physicians pursuing this pathway must secure employment at a qualifying site before applying. Illinois also has prevailing wage requirements tied to H-1B sponsorship that employers must meet based on specialty and geographic location.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored physician jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
