Which companies sponsor visas for IT engineers in Maryland?
Federal contractors and technology firms are the most active sponsors in Maryland. Leidos, Northrop Grumman, Booz Allen Hamilton, Lockheed Martin, and SAIC have consistent H-1B visa filing histories for IT engineering roles. Commercial employers including T. Rowe Price, CareFirst, and various defense-adjacent tech firms also sponsor regularly, particularly for software, cloud, and systems engineering positions in the Baltimore and Rockville areas.
Which visa types are most common for IT engineer roles in Maryland?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for IT engineers in Maryland, covering roles in software engineering, cloud architecture, cybersecurity, and systems integration that qualify as specialty occupations. TN visas are an option for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles. Some positions with defense contractors may require security clearances, which adds a separate eligibility layer beyond visa classification.
Which cities in Maryland have the most IT engineer sponsorship jobs?
The Baltimore-Washington corridor concentrates the majority of IT engineer sponsorship activity in Maryland. Bethesda, Rockville, and the greater Montgomery County area host numerous federal contractors and technology firms. Baltimore itself has a growing cybersecurity and health IT sector, with employers tied to Johns Hopkins, the University of Maryland Medical System, and federal agencies like the NSA headquartered in nearby Fort Meade.
How to find it engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Maryland?
Migrate Mate filters IT engineer job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability and location, making it straightforward to find Maryland-based roles where employers have confirmed sponsorship willingness. Because Maryland's market is heavily contractor-driven, filtering for IT engineer roles in Montgomery County, Anne Arundel County, and Baltimore gives the most relevant results. Migrate Mate surfaces positions across both commercial and government-adjacent employers actively hiring internationally.
Are there state-specific considerations for IT engineers seeking sponsorship in Maryland?
Maryland's IT engineering market has a distinctive characteristic: a significant share of roles with federal contractors require or prefer security clearances, which are only available to U.S. citizens or permanent residents. This narrows the sponsorable pool to commercial-track positions and clearance-exempt roles. The state also has a strong university pipeline through University of Maryland College Park, which feeds both private employers and federal agencies with internationally trained engineers.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored it engineer jobs in Maryland?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
