Role Summary
As a Senior Workplace Experience Technology Engineer, you will own end-to-end service delivery for critical workplace technology services, ensuring availability, reliability, and operational excellence across diverse technology domains and consumer groups. You will lead operational readiness and lifecycle activities including monitoring and alerting, incident and problem management (root cause analysis and preventive actions), change and release coordination, and the development of runbooks and support documentation. You will also execute and continuously validate backup, recovery, and disaster recovery capabilities, partnering with infrastructure, security, and application teams to meet resilience, security, and compliance requirements.
In addition to general infrastructure responsibilities, this role serves as the Level 3 Messaging Engineer for the Collaboration Team and is the primary Exchange (Online and on premises) engineering and architecture subject matter expert. The engineer provides architectural direction, reference designs, and implementation leadership for a hybrid enterprise messaging ecosystem, including core Exchange services (mail flow/transport, client access, high availability and resiliency, migration strategy, and lifecycle/patch management), as well as Microsoft Exchange Online, on-premises Exchange, IronPort, Microsoft Teams, M365/Entra ID identity integrations, mobile device management, messaging security controls, and Microsoft 365 Copilot integration within the messaging and collaboration ecosystem, with emphasis on secure-by-design configuration, data governance, and end-user service reliability.
Responsibilities
• Leads projects or work streams within broader programs, delivering scope through planning, execution, risk management, and stakeholder communication; serves as a standards and process advisor in area of specialty.
• Operates independently with minimal oversight; mentors and coaches less experienced engineers through design reviews, troubleshooting guidance, and knowledge transfer.
• Leads Level 3 incident response for messaging and collaboration services, rapidly restoring service while driving root cause analysis, corrective actions, and prevention of recurrence to meet service-level objectives.
• Reviews and approves production readiness for technology solution implementations and deployments, ensuring monitoring/alerting, backup/restore, DR runbooks, support documentation, and operational handoff are complete; coordinates next steps across involved teams.
• Oversees analysis of health, performance, and capacity trends (telemetry, logs, and user experience signals) and drives preventive actions and continuous service improvements.
• Uses structured problem-solving and data-driven analysis (queries, metrics, statistical trend review) to diagnose complex issues, identify systemic patterns, and improve team practices through automation and standardization.
• Provides architectural oversight, system design, and implementation leadership for enterprise messaging and collaboration platforms, with primary ownership for hybrid Microsoft Exchange (Online and on premises) architecture and engineering.
• Leads technical strategy and roadmap planning to ensure long-term health, resiliency, performance, and regulatory compliance of communication systems; defines standards, reference designs, and guardrails.
• Drives modernization initiatives such as IronPort/secure email gateway upgrades, hybrid Exchange configuration and migration activities, SharePoint and OneDrive migration and governance improvements, and mobile device management (MDM) strategy enhancements.
• Shapes identity, provisioning, and directory synchronization models in partnership with Identity Services, addressing hybrid dependencies (AD/Entra ID), attribute governance, access policies, and compliance requirements.
• Designs, automates, and governs enterprise Microsoft Teams policies (meetings, messaging, external access) and messaging security controls (DLP, sensitivity labeling, anti-phishing/anti-malware), ensuring alignment with security and compliance standards.
• Plans and executes vulnerability response, security updates, and patch sequencing for hybrid Exchange environments, including pre-production validation, change control, rollback planning, and coordination with Security and Infrastructure teams.
• Guides enterprise messaging and collaboration architecture for platform integrations (e.g., Salesforce, Outlook scheduling, and line-of-business applications), including authentication/authorization patterns, mail flow/connectors, and Microsoft 365 Copilot readiness considerations such as secure access, information governance, and oversharing risk reduction.
Business Knowledge:
• Possesses a solid understanding of the tech and asset management industries and internal business units, enabling navigation of key partners and comprehension of business impact.
• Reviews capacity utilization for trends, raises awareness across teams, and addresses excesses and shortages in infrastructure resources.
Qualifications
Required:
• BS or MS degree (or equivalent experience) and 5+ years of relevant experience.
• Requires in-depth knowledge and expertise in infrastructure operations, messaging platforms, and working knowledge of related disciplines.
• Deep understanding of Microsoft Exchange (on-prem and online), IronPort, Microsoft Teams, M365/Entra ID, mobile device management, and messaging security controls.
• Familiarity with architectural oversight and modernization strategies for communication systems.
• Root cause analysis skills for investigating incidents impacting technology availability.
• Stays abreast of industry trends and technologies, especially in messaging and collaboration platforms.
• Administers processes and procedures related to code management and performance tuning.
• Proven ability to work independently, lead projects, and provide mentorship.
Preferred:
• SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business administration, including migration planning/execution, governance (site lifecycle, sharing controls), and user experience troubleshooting.
• Microsoft Teams platform administration at scale (policy/package management, voice/meetings considerations, external access, and Teams Rooms/meeting devices as applicable).
• Microsoft Purview capabilities supporting collaboration workloads (sensitivity labels, DLP, retention, eDiscovery) and alignment with information governance standards.
• Power Platform governance and administration (environment strategy, DLP policies, connectors, ALM), plus familiarity integrating Power Automate with M365 services.
• Experience operationalizing Microsoft 365 Copilot for collaboration scenarios (readiness, access governance, adoption support, and monitoring of user-impacting issues).

Which companies in Maryland sponsor visas for product support engineers?
Maryland employers with documented H-1B sponsorship histories for technical support roles include Tenable, Leidos, Booz Allen Hamilton, Ciena, and T. Rowe Price. Government contractors in the Baltimore-Washington corridor frequently hire product support engineers and have structured immigration processes. Mid-sized cybersecurity and networking companies headquartered in the state also appear regularly in Department of Labor LCA filings for this role category.
What visa types are most common for product support engineers in Maryland?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for product support engineers in Maryland, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field. Candidates from India and China often rely on the H-1B, while candidates from Australia may pursue the E-3, and Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify under TN status for computer systems analyst or engineer classifications.
How to find product support engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Maryland?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship willingness, so you can search product support engineer roles in Maryland without sorting through positions that won't consider international candidates. The platform surfaces employers who have filed LCAs or petitioned for H-1B workers in this role category, which makes it more targeted than general job searches for candidates who need sponsorship in the Maryland market.
Which cities in Maryland have the most product support engineer sponsorship jobs?
Bethesda, Rockville, and Columbia account for a significant share of Maryland's sponsored product support engineer roles, driven by the concentration of federal contractors and healthcare IT firms along the I-270 corridor. Baltimore also generates consistent openings, particularly in financial services and cybersecurity. Annapolis and the DC-adjacent suburbs of Montgomery County are secondary hubs worth monitoring for new postings.
Are there any Maryland-specific considerations for product support engineers seeking visa sponsorship?
Maryland's heavy federal contracting presence means some product support engineer roles require security clearances, which non-citizens generally cannot obtain, effectively limiting sponsorship eligibility at those employers. Candidates should confirm clearance requirements before applying. On the positive side, the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins produce a strong technical talent pipeline, and many regional employers are experienced with H-1B petitions due to historically high international graduate hiring in the area.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored product support engineer jobs in Maryland?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
