Professional services firms and SaaS companies headquartered in Boston and Cambridge also regularly sponsor international hires in business development functions.
Which visa types are most common for business development specialist roles in Massachusetts?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa for business development specialists in Massachusetts, provided the role requires a specialized bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as business administration, marketing, or a technical discipline. The O-1A is an option for candidates with demonstrated extraordinary achievements. Canadians and Mexicans may qualify for the TN visa under business categories, depending on the specific job duties and employer.

Are there state-specific considerations for business development specialists seeking visa sponsorship in Massachusetts?
Massachusetts employers must pay H-1B holders the prevailing wage for the specific occupation and location, as determined by Department of Labor standards. Business development specialist roles in Greater Boston often command higher prevailing wage requirements than the national average, reflecting the area's competitive talent market. Massachusetts also has a large international graduate pipeline through universities like MIT, Harvard, and Northeastern, meaning employers in the region are generally experienced with sponsorship processes.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored business development specialist jobs in Massachusetts?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
