Which companies sponsor visas for IT engineers in Michigan?
Michigan's largest IT engineer visa sponsors are concentrated in the automotive and manufacturing technology sectors. Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Stellantis, and automotive supplier Bosch sponsor H-1B workers for IT engineering roles regularly. Beyond automotive, DTE Energy, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, and Rocket Companies in Detroit have also appeared in Department of Labor LCA filings for IT engineering positions.
Which visa types are most common for IT engineer roles in Michigan?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for IT engineers in Michigan, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field. Canadian and Mexican nationals working as IT engineers may also qualify for TN visa status, which offers a faster process without lottery participation.

Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, so you can search IT engineer roles in Michigan without sifting through positions that won't support international candidates. The platform surfaces employers with documented sponsorship history in the state, which is particularly useful given Michigan's mix of large automotive employers and smaller Ann Arbor tech firms that don't always advertise sponsorship explicitly.
Which cities in Michigan have the most IT engineer sponsorship jobs?
Detroit and its suburbs, particularly Dearborn, Auburn Hills, and Troy, account for the largest share of IT engineer sponsorship activity in Michigan due to the concentration of automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers. Ann Arbor is the second most active area, driven by University of Michigan spinoffs and established tech employers. Grand Rapids has a smaller but growing IT hiring base tied to healthcare and manufacturing technology companies.
Are there any Michigan-specific considerations for IT engineers seeking visa sponsorship?
Michigan's prevailing wage requirements for IT engineers are determined by the Department of Labor based on the specific metropolitan area, so wages differ between Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Grand Rapids. The state's heavy automotive industry focus means many IT engineer roles involve embedded systems, vehicle software, or manufacturing IT, which can affect how employers define the specialty occupation on H-1B petitions. University of Michigan and Michigan State University also generate a consistent pipeline of OPT candidates that local employers are familiar with sponsoring.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored it engineer jobs in Michigan?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
