Which companies sponsor visas for medical doctors in Michigan?
Michigan's largest health systems are the most active sponsors for international physicians. Henry Ford Health, Corewell Health (formerly Beaumont), Michigan Medicine at the University of Michigan, Sparrow Health System, and McLaren Health Care have all sponsored physicians on work visas. Academic medical centers tend to sponsor more consistently than smaller private practices, particularly for subspecialty and fellowship-trained physicians.
Which visa types are most common for medical doctor roles in Michigan?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa for licensed physicians in Michigan, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation. The J-1 visa waiver is also widely used, particularly for physicians completing residency or fellowship training who commit to working in designated underserved areas. The O-1A is available for physicians with exceptional credentials, though it requires substantial documentation of distinction in the field.
Which cities in Michigan have the most medical doctor sponsorship jobs?
Detroit and its suburbs account for the highest concentration of physician sponsorship opportunities in Michigan, driven by Henry Ford Health and Corewell Health's large hospital networks. Ann Arbor is significant due to Michigan Medicine and the University of Michigan's academic programs. Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Flint also have active hiring, with rural areas in the Upper Peninsula sometimes offering J-1 waiver opportunities tied to underserved community designations.
How to find medical doctor visa sponsorship jobs in Michigan?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles that offer visa sponsorship, making it straightforward to browse medical doctor openings in Michigan without manually screening out employers who don't sponsor. You can filter by state and role to see current opportunities at Michigan health systems and hospitals. This saves significant time compared to reviewing general medical job boards where sponsorship status is rarely disclosed upfront.
Are there state-specific considerations for international medical doctors seeking jobs in Michigan?
Michigan requires physicians to hold a valid Michigan medical license, which international graduates must obtain through the Michigan Board of Medicine before practicing independently. J-1 waiver applicants can pursue Conrad 30 slots administered through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, which are allocated annually and targeted at physicians willing to practice in Health Professional Shortage Areas across the state. These slots are competitive and typically require a multi-year service commitment.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored medical doctor jobs in Michigan?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
