Which companies sponsor visas for mental health professionals in Michigan?
Major sponsors in Michigan include Henry Ford Health System, Ascension Michigan, Trinity Health, Michigan Medicine (University of Michigan Health), and Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network. Federally qualified health centers such as Cherry Health in Grand Rapids also sponsor visas regularly. Academic medical centers and larger community mental health organizations tend to have established immigration processes and dedicated HR support for sponsoring foreign-born clinicians.
Which visa types are most common for mental health roles in Michigan?
The H-1B is the most common visa for licensed mental health roles such as psychologists, licensed professional counselors, and clinical social workers, provided the position requires at least a relevant bachelor's degree. The J-1 visa is widely used for psychiatry residency and fellowship training at Michigan academic medical centers. Some employers in underserved areas also pursue Conrad 30 J-1 waivers, allowing physicians completing psychiatric training to remain in the state.
Which cities in Michigan have the most mental health sponsorship jobs?
Detroit and its metro area account for the largest share of mental health sponsorship opportunities, driven by large hospital systems and community mental health agencies serving a dense urban population. Ann Arbor sees consistent demand through Michigan Medicine and university-affiliated behavioral health programs. Grand Rapids is a growing hub, with Spectrum Health and Cherry Health both active in hiring. Lansing and Flint also have openings, particularly through community-based and publicly funded organizations.
How to find mental health visa sponsorship jobs in Michigan?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters mental health roles in Michigan that include visa sponsorship. Rather than sorting through postings where sponsorship status is unclear, Migrate Mate surfaces positions from employers who have a documented history of sponsoring foreign-born workers. For mental health professionals targeting Michigan, filtering by role type and location on Migrate Mate is a practical first step in identifying active opportunities.
Are there state-specific considerations for mental health visa sponsorship in Michigan?
Michigan licenses mental health professionals at the state level, so foreign-trained clinicians must verify that their credentials meet Michigan's requirements through the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs before beginning work. Degree equivalency evaluations are often required for internationally trained applicants. Michigan also participates in federal programs that incentivize placement in Mental Health Professional Shortage Areas, which can influence where sponsoring employers are located and what visa pathways they pursue.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored mental health jobs in Michigan?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
