Which companies sponsor visas for project architects in Michigan?
Firms with established Michigan offices and documented H-1B visa sponsorship histories include SmithGroup (headquartered in Detroit), Gensler, HOK, Harley Ellis Devereaux, and Neumann/Smith Architecture. Larger architecture and engineering firms are more likely to sponsor because they have dedicated HR infrastructure for immigration filings. Corporate real estate developers and automotive campus project owners also hire project architects directly and have sponsored visa candidates.
Which visa types are most common for project architect roles in Michigan?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for project architects in Michigan, as the role typically requires a professional degree in architecture, satisfying the specialty occupation standard. Architects licensed in Canada may qualify for TN visa status under the USMCA, which offers a simpler process without an annual cap. O-1A visas are an option for architects with demonstrated exceptional achievement, such as award recognition or significant published work.
Which cities in Michigan have the most project architect sponsorship jobs?
Detroit generates the highest volume of project architect roles in Michigan, driven by ongoing mixed-use redevelopment, automotive facility upgrades, and cultural institution projects. Grand Rapids has a growing design community supported by healthcare and education construction. Ann Arbor sees consistent demand tied to University of Michigan campus expansion. Smaller but active markets include Kalamazoo and Lansing, particularly for public and institutional architecture projects.
How to find project architect visa sponsorship jobs in Michigan?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international architects seeking visa sponsorship in the U.S. You can filter by state to browse project architect roles in Michigan posted by firms that have sponsored before. This saves significant time compared to manually researching each firm's immigration history. Migrate Mate surfaces Michigan-specific openings where sponsorship is explicitly part of the hiring conversation, which matters most when your work authorization depends on the employer's willingness to file.
What state-specific factors should project architects know about Michigan sponsorship?
Michigan's Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs oversees architectural licensure, and H-1B sponsorship does not automatically grant you a Michigan license. Most Michigan firms sponsor candidates who are either already licensed in another U.S. state or jurisdiction, or are actively working toward licensure through the Architect Registration Examination. Michigan's prevailing wage determinations for H-1B petitions reference the Bureau of Labor Statistics data for the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn and Grand Rapids metropolitan areas, which vary by experience level.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored project architect jobs in Michigan?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
