Meet the Team
Join our SW Systems and Safety - Behaviors & Autonomy Team, where we operate at the intersection of safety, autonomy, data, and large-scale system design. Our team works across mapping, AI/ML, validation, and software engineering to define and evaluate the Operational Design Domain (ODD) and ensure our autonomous systems perform safely and reliably in the real world. We are seeking a Senior Autonomy Systems Engineer with strong experience in data-driven system design, autonomy workflows, and large-scale data analysis. This role focuses on defining how we leverage data across mapping, simulation, and real-world logs to characterize operating environments, derive requirements, and guide system-level decisions. This is a highly cross-functional role that blends systems thinking with hands-on technical depth in Python, cloud data access, and autonomy data pipelines.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Lead ODD characterization efforts by analyzing large-scale datasets across real-world, simulated, and mapped environments
- Define system-level strategies for leveraging map data (HD/SD), telemetry, and autonomy logs to assess operating conditions
- Design and implement Python-based workflows to extract, transform, and analyze data from cloud-based systems
- Work across internal and supplier-provided datasets (mapping, perception, vehicle data) to derive actionable insights
- Define KPIs and metrics that evaluate safety, performance, and release readiness of autonomy systems
- Translate data insights into system-level requirements, design decisions, and validation strategies
- Collaborate with mapping, perception, AI/ML, and validation teams to align on data usage and system behavior
- Drive technical direction across teams by connecting data, system architecture, and real-world performance
- Identify gaps in data, tooling, and system design and propose scalable solutions
What You’ll Need To Succeed
- BS + 6+ years, MS + 3+ years, or PhD + 1+ years in Robotics, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or related field
- Strong experience working with autonomy, robotics, or large-scale distributed systems
- Proficiency in Python for data analysis, scripting, and system workflows
- Experience accessing and processing large datasets from cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure)
- Experience working with mapping systems (HD maps, SD maps, or similar structured spatial data)
- Strong system-level thinking and ability to translate data into design decisions
- Experience working cross-functionally with software, data, and systems teams
- Ability to operate in ambiguous environments and drive clarity through technical direction
Bonus Points
- Experience in autonomous vehicles or ADAS systems
- Familiarity with ODD frameworks, scenario generation, or 6-layer environment modeling
- Experience with safety frameworks (SOTIF, ISO 26262, AI safety)
- Experience working with large-scale data pipelines or distributed systems
- Exposure to simulation environments or autonomy validation workflows

Which companies sponsor visas for senior devops engineers in Michigan?
Michigan's largest visa sponsors for senior DevOps engineers include Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Stellantis, and their affiliated technology units, all of which have significant cloud and platform engineering teams. Detroit-based financial technology firms such as Rocket Companies also sponsor regularly. Large consulting firms with Michigan delivery centers, including Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services, are among the most active H-1B visa filers for DevOps roles in the state.
Which visa types are most common for senior devops engineer roles in Michigan?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for senior DevOps engineers in Michigan. The role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation because it requires a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, information systems, or a related field. Candidates already holding L-1B intracompany transferee status through a multinational employer, or those with O-1A extraordinary ability classification, may also find opportunities with Michigan's large corporate tech employers.
Which cities in Michigan have the most senior devops engineer sponsorship jobs?
Detroit and its surrounding suburbs, particularly Dearborn, Auburn Hills, and Southfield, account for the majority of senior DevOps sponsorship activity in Michigan due to the concentration of automotive technology operations there. Ann Arbor is the second-largest hub, driven by University of Michigan research spin-offs and established tech employers. Grand Rapids has a smaller but growing presence through healthcare IT and manufacturing technology firms.
How to find senior devops engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Michigan?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship and filters senior DevOps engineer roles in Michigan by sponsorship history, so you're not sifting through listings from employers who won't file. You can narrow results by city, experience level, and visa type. Because Michigan's sponsoring employers are heavily concentrated in automotive tech and enterprise IT, filtering by those sectors on Migrate Mate surfaces the most relevant opportunities.
What should senior devops engineers know about Michigan's visa sponsorship market before applying?
Michigan's sponsorship activity for senior DevOps engineers is closely tied to the automotive industry's ongoing digital transformation, meaning demand is real but often tied to enterprise-scale infrastructure rather than startup environments. Employers here frequently require hands-on experience with hybrid cloud architectures and IaC tooling such as Terraform or Ansible. The Department of Labor's prevailing wage requirements apply to every H-1B petition, so sponsoring employers must pay wages at or above the determined level for the Detroit or Ann Arbor metropolitan areas.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored senior devops engineer jobs in Michigan?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
