Which companies sponsor visas for software design engineers in Michigan?
Michigan's largest visa sponsors for software design engineers are concentrated in the automotive and mobility tech sectors. Ford Motor Company, General Motors, and Stellantis regularly file H-1B visa petitions for software design roles tied to vehicle software, ADAS, and infotainment systems. Beyond automotive, companies like Altair, Kla Corporation, and medical device firms in the Ann Arbor area have also sponsored software design engineers.
Which visa types are most common for software design engineer roles in Michigan?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for software design engineers in Michigan, given that the role typically requires a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field, meeting the specialty occupation standard. Some engineers enter through OPT following studies at the University of Michigan or Michigan State, with employers filing H-1B petitions before OPT expires. Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify for TN visas under the NAFTA/USMCA engineer category.
How to find software design engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Michigan?
Migrate Mate filters software design engineer jobs in Michigan specifically by visa sponsorship, so you're not sorting through listings from employers who won't file. The platform is built for international candidates and surfaces roles from Michigan's automotive, mobility, and tech employers that have active sponsorship histories. Searching on Migrate Mate by role and state saves time compared to manually researching which Michigan companies sponsor.
Which cities in Michigan have the most software design engineer sponsorship jobs?
The Detroit metro area, including Dearborn, Troy, and Auburn Hills, accounts for the largest share of software design engineer sponsorship activity in Michigan due to the headquarters presence of the major automakers and their Tier 1 suppliers. Ann Arbor is the second-strongest market, driven by University of Michigan spin-offs, automotive R&D centers, and a growing software startup ecosystem. Grand Rapids has a smaller but active base of manufacturing technology and medical device employers.
Are there any Michigan-specific considerations for software design engineers seeking visa sponsorship?
Michigan's software design engineer market is heavily shaped by automotive transformation. Many sponsorship roles involve domain-specific skills like embedded C/C++, functional safety standards such as ISO 26262, or automotive communication protocols, so candidates with those backgrounds may find Michigan employers more receptive than generalist software engineers. The University of Michigan and Michigan State University also create a pipeline that some large employers, including Ford and GM, use as a starting point for OPT-to-H-1B sponsorship.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored software design engineer jobs in Michigan?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
