ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The IT Database Administrator is responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, and performance optimization of enterprise SQL Server and Oracle databases. This role ensures the availability, security, integrity, and scalability of critical data systems while supporting application teams and business stakeholders. The Database Administrator will proactively monitor database environments, troubleshoot issues, and implement best practices for backup recovery, performance tuning, and data protection.
Responsibilities:
- Deploy, configure, and maintain SQL Server and Oracle databases in AWS environments.
- Manage database services using AWS technologies such as EC2, RDS, and related storage and networking components.
- Monitor and optimize database performance, availability, and cost efficiency in AWS.
- Design and support high availability and disaster recovery solutions leveraging AWS architecture.
- Implement and manage backup, restore, and retention strategies using AWS-native and database tools.
- Enforce database security best practices, including IAM integration, encryption, and network controls.
- Troubleshoot and resolve database and infrastructure issues across AWS-hosted environments.
- Collaborate with application and cloud teams to design scalable, resilient database solutions.
- Plan and execute database migrations to and within AWS environments.
- Monitor capacity, storage growth, and performance trends to support scalability planning.
- Automate routine database operations and monitoring using scripting and AWS services.
- Develop and maintain documentation, standards, and best practices for cloud-based databases.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Requirements:
- Associate degree (2-year degree). Preferred: BS /BA in Computer Science, Information Technology Certification.
- Minimum three years’ experience in technician or similar applicable role.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle administration.
- Experience managing databases in AWS environments (RDS, EC2, storage, networking).
- Solid understanding of database architecture, indexing strategies, and query optimization.
- Experience implementing high availability and disaster recovery solutions.
- Knowledge of backup, recovery models, and business continuity planning.
- Understanding of database security principles, encryption, IAM, and access controls.
- Ability to monitor and tune database performance in production environments.
- Experience with database migrations, upgrades, and patch management.
- Proficiency in scripting and automation (e.g., PowerShell, Bash, or similar tools).
- Familiarity with AWS monitoring and logging tools such as CloudWatch.
- Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong documentation and process discipline.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with development, infrastructure, and security teams.
