The Hispanic Education Act, signed into law in 2010, is focused on improving the educational success and postsecondary attainment for the state’s Hispanic students.
The purpose of the Hispanic Education Act is to:
A. Provide for the study, development, and implementation of educational systems that affect the academic success of Hispanic students to increase graduation rates and ensure lifelong success;
B. protect and preserve New Mexico’s heritage Spanish language and culture;
C. encourage and foster parental involvement in the education of their children; and
D. provide mechanisms for parents; community, community-based and business organizations; public schools; school districts; charter schools; public post-secondary educational institutions, the higher education department; the public education department; and state and local policymakers to work together to improve educational opportunities for Hispanic students for the purpose of increasing graduation rates, increasing post-secondary enrollment, retention and completion and ensuring lifelong success.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To provide clerical support for the Hispanic Education and Black Education Liaisons and budgetary oversight of the Hispanic Education and Black Education Acts. The Hispanic and Black Education Acts are focused on supporting districts and charter schools with how to better serve Hispanic and Black students and their families.
Collaborate with the Hispanic and Black Education Liaisons and other staff which includes but is not limited to: Providing timely and relevant customer service, technical assistance, and support to districts across the state. This position also performs clerical functions such as preparing correspondence, receiving visitors, arranging conference calls, scheduling meetings, supporting travel requests, routing documents for signature, supporting Hispanic and Black Education Acts fiscal management, and coordinating to ensure adequate office supplies and functioning technology.
CUSTOMERS
Secretary of Education, Deputy Cabinet Secretaries, Hispanic and Black Education Liaison, Superintendents, Tribes, District Administrators of Hispanic and Black Education, School Administrators, Teachers and Students and their Families.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High School diploma or Equivalency and two (2) years of experience in office administration, budgeting, purchasing, finance, accounting, auditing, cash management, contract management, and/or the procedures of business and management principles involved in strategic planning. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required experience.
EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico's Driver's License.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required.
