Which companies sponsor visas for civil engineers in New York?
The largest sponsors include AECOM, WSP USA, Jacobs Engineering, and Stantec, all of which maintain significant New York offices and regularly file H-1B visa petitions for civil engineering roles. Public-sector contractors working on MTA capital programs and NYCDOT projects also generate consistent sponsorship activity. Smaller geotechnical and structural consultancies in New York City sponsor as well, though less predictably than the major firms.
Which visa types are most common for civil engineer roles in New York?
The H-1B is the most common visa for civil engineers in New York, as the role qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related field. Candidates from Canada and Mexico may pursue the TN visa under the USMCA, which covers engineers without a cap or lottery. Australian nationals can use the E-3 visa, which also has no lottery and allows two-year renewable status.
Which cities in New York have the most civil engineer sponsorship jobs?
New York City accounts for the largest share, driven by its concentration of engineering consultancies, public infrastructure agencies, and large-scale capital programs. Buffalo is a secondary hub, particularly for transportation and water infrastructure projects tied to state and federal investment. Albany also generates sponsorship activity through state agency contracting and utility infrastructure work across the Capital Region.
How to find civil engineer visa sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles where employers have a documented history of visa sponsorship, saving civil engineers in New York from sorting through postings that exclude international candidates. You can search by role and state to surface opportunities at firms like AECOM, WSP, and Jacobs that are actively hiring. This is especially useful if you're on OPT or waiting on an H-1B transfer and need to move quickly.
Are there any New York-specific considerations for civil engineers seeking visa sponsorship?
New York civil engineering roles often require a Professional Engineer (PE) license for senior positions, which involves passing the NCEES exams and meeting state experience requirements through the New York State Education Department. International candidates working toward licensure should confirm whether their foreign degree qualifies under New York's education review process. The state's prevailing wage rules also apply to H-1B petitions, meaning employers must certify wages meet Department of Labor standards for the specific work location.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored civil engineer jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
