Role Purpose
MT&E is seeking an Advanced Process Controls Engineer who believes cutting-edge controls, optimization, and machine learning (ML) can transform manufacturing and deliver competitive advantage. This is one of the most versatile technical roles at Corning, with broad scope across our businesses. The field is evolving from traditional single-input/single-output control toward complex multi-input/multi-output problems that call for model-based strategies, most notably model predictive control (MPC), and large-scale numerical optimization for production planning, scheduling, and ware flow. Corning is also investing in machine learning for process monitoring, fault detection, defect classification, and predictive maintenance.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and implement controls solutions for manufacturing processes within multi-disciplinary teams.
- Evaluate existing control strategies and propose enhancements, from PID improvements (cascade, feedforward, gain-scheduling, loop pairing) to model-based algorithms such as MPC and internal model control (IMC).
- Develop and maintain MPC-based solutions across the organization.
- Build and improve large-scale optimization models (LP, NLP, MILP) for production planning and scheduling, translating business and process logic into objectives and constraints.
- Partner with manufacturing to define appropriate hardware and software platforms and implement solutions in existing PLC/DCS environments.
- Work with subject matter experts and apply data analytics and ML to deepen process understanding and surface control or optimization opportunities.
- Apply multivariate statistics and ML to fault diagnosis and isolation, defect classification, and predictive maintenance.
- Lead projects in a research, development, and engineering environment; write proposals to initiate new work.
- Facilitate transfer of new technologies into manufacturing and train manufacturing and engineering personnel.
- Generate intellectual property through technical reports, invention disclosures, and patents.
Travel Requirements
- Must be available for significant travel, primarily domestic, to multiple locations to support business needs. International travel could be required as well. Travel up to 25%.
Experiences/Education - Required
- M.S. or PhD in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering (or a related field) with coursework in Advanced Controls, Optimization, or Data Analytics. PhD highly preferred.
- 1–5 years of industry experience on manufacturing processes. New graduates with related internship experience will be considered.
Required Skills
- Working knowledge of process control technologies, including MPC and PID; practical PID loop tuning experience.
- Controls-oriented modeling and system identification.
- Grounds control design in process first principles (heat/mass transfer, fluid dynamics, kinetics).
- Foundation in numerical optimization (LP, NLP, MILP, convex optimization) and ability to formulate problems from business and process logic.
- Programming experience in MATLAB/Simulink and Python.
- Familiarity with ML classification and regression techniques.
- Strong problem-solving skills; clear written and verbal communication for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment.
- Self-directed and collaborative; delivers on commitments.
Desired Skills
- Hands-on experience implementing, tuning, and maintaining MPC.
- Experience with large-scale optimization solvers (e.g., Gurobi) and modeling languages (Pyomo, AMPL, PuLP).
- Multivariate statistical process control methods such as PCA and PLS regression.
- Experience operationalizing ML-driven models in manufacturing.
- Git and version control.
- Experience in or leading cross-functional and global teams.
- Strong technical curiosity and appetite for hard technical problems.

Which companies sponsor visas for controls engineers in New York?
Large industrial employers with established immigration programs are the most reliable sponsors. In New York, these include Siemens, Honeywell, Con Edison, National Grid, and Corning. Defense contractors operating near Buffalo and Long Island, such as Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, also sponsor controls engineers, though some defense roles require U.S. citizenship and are not open to visa sponsorship candidates.
Which visa types are most common for controls engineer roles in New York?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa for controls engineers in New York, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, or systems engineering. Candidates already holding TN visa status (for Canadian and Mexican nationals) or O-1 visas can also work in controls engineering roles. Employers filing Labor Condition Applications with the Department of Labor is a standard part of the H-1B process for these positions.
Which cities in New York have the most controls engineer sponsorship jobs?
Rochester and Buffalo lead in controls engineering sponsorship activity due to their concentration of advanced manufacturing, automotive supply chain, and food processing facilities. The Hudson Valley and Albany corridor attract controls engineers for semiconductor and energy applications. New York City has fewer controls engineering openings but hosts corporate offices of major industrial firms that manage sponsorship centrally for roles placed at facilities statewide.
How to find controls engineer visa sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for visa sponsorship, so you can browse controls engineer openings in New York without manually screening hundreds of postings for sponsorship eligibility. The platform surfaces roles at employers with documented sponsorship histories, which is particularly useful for controls engineering positions where sponsorship availability varies significantly across industries like utilities, defense, and manufacturing.
Are there any New York-specific considerations for controls engineers seeking visa sponsorship?
New York's prevailing wage requirements under Department of Labor rules mean employers must pay H-1B controls engineers wages that meet the applicable regional wage level for the job location, which differs between Buffalo, Rochester, and New York City. New York also has a strong pipeline of controls engineering talent from institutions like RIT and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, meaning employers are familiar with sponsoring international graduates from these programs.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored controls engineer jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
