Which companies and institutions sponsor visas for research roles in New York?
Major sponsors include Columbia University, Cornell University, NYU, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Rockefeller University, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Pfizer, and the New York State Department of Health. Federal agencies with New York offices, such as the CDC's field offices, also sponsor research staff. Academic medical centers and private research institutes consistently rank among the most active sponsors in the state.
Which visa types are most common for research roles in New York?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa for research scientists and analysts in industry settings. J-1 visas are widely used for postdoctoral researchers and visiting scholars at universities and research institutions under exchange visitor programs. O-1A visas appear for researchers with exceptional recognition in their field. Some university-affiliated roles also use TN visa status for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying research classifications.
Which cities in New York have the most research visa sponsorship jobs?
New York City accounts for the largest share, driven by its concentration of academic medical centers, biotech firms, and research universities across Manhattan and the outer boroughs. Buffalo has a growing research presence through the University at Buffalo and affiliated health systems. Albany hosts state-level public health and policy research roles. Long Island, particularly around Stony Brook University and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, is another active corridor.
How to find research visa sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it practical to search research roles in New York without manually screening each employer. You can browse positions at universities, hospitals, pharma companies, and research institutes that have confirmed sponsorship histories. This is especially useful for H-1B and J-1 eligible candidates targeting New York's academic and life sciences sectors.
Are there state-specific considerations for research sponsorship jobs in New York?
New York's prevailing wage requirements under the H-1B program are calculated using Department of Labor data for the specific metropolitan area, so wages for a research role in New York City will typically reflect higher regional benchmarks than upstate positions. Many New York research institutions also have established international scholar offices that manage J-1 and H-1B petitions in-house, which can simplify the sponsorship process for qualifying candidates.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored research jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
