Which companies sponsor visas for research scientists in North Carolina?
Biogen, Novo Nordisk, Bayer, and GlaxoSmithKline all have significant research operations in North Carolina and have filed for research scientist positions under H-1B and other work visas. Academic medical centers like Duke University Health System and UNC-Chapel Hill are also consistent sponsors, particularly for postdoctoral researchers transitioning into staff scientist roles.
Which visa types are most common for research scientist roles in North Carolina?
The H-1B is the most common visa for research scientists employed at private companies in North Carolina, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific field. Researchers at universities or nonprofit research institutions may also be eligible for cap-exempt H-1B filings, which bypass the annual lottery. The O-1A is another pathway for scientists with a record of extraordinary achievement.
Which cities in North Carolina have the most research scientist sponsorship jobs?
The Research Triangle area, covering Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill, accounts for the large majority of research scientist sponsorship activity in North Carolina. Research Triangle Park itself sits at the center of this cluster. Charlotte has a smaller but growing presence, primarily in medical device and clinical research. Outside these metros, sponsored research roles are comparatively limited.
How to find research scientist visa sponsorship jobs in North Carolina?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles where employers have a history of visa sponsorship, making it easier to identify research scientist positions in North Carolina without sorting through listings from companies unlikely to sponsor. You can filter by state and role type to focus on RTP-area employers in pharma, biotech, and academic research, where sponsorship is most common.
Are there any state-specific factors that affect visa sponsorship for research scientists in North Carolina?
North Carolina's concentration of research activity in RTP means many employers are large multinationals or well-funded academic institutions with established immigration processes and in-house or retained immigration counsel. This generally means more experience handling H-1B filings compared to smaller or regional employers. University-affiliated positions may also offer cap-exempt H-1B status, which removes the lottery as a variable for eligible candidates.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored research scientist jobs in North Carolina?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
