Which companies sponsor visas for structural engineers in North Dakota?
Engineering consultancies with active North Dakota operations are the primary sponsors. Kadrmas, Lee and Jackson (KLJ) and Houston Engineering handle large transportation and municipal infrastructure projects that require structural expertise. HDR, which has offices in Fargo, also sponsors H-1B visa workers for engineering roles. Energy companies operating in the Bakken region occasionally sponsor structural engineers for facility and pipeline-related work.
Which visa types are most common for structural engineer roles in North Dakota?
The H-1B is the most common visa for structural engineers in North Dakota. Structural engineering meets the specialty occupation requirement because the role typically requires a bachelor's degree or higher in civil or structural engineering. Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify for the TN visa under the NAFTA/USMCA engineer category, which can be a faster alternative to H-1B for eligible candidates.
Which cities in North Dakota have the most structural engineer sponsorship jobs?
Fargo is the largest concentration point, as North Dakota's biggest city and home to most of the state's major engineering firms. Bismarck, the state capital, generates consistent work through state government infrastructure projects and DOT contracts. Grand Forks has engineering activity tied to the University of North Dakota and regional construction. Williston sees periodic demand driven by oil and gas infrastructure in the Bakken.
How to find structural engineer visa sponsorship jobs in North Dakota?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles offering visa sponsorship, so you can search structural engineer positions in North Dakota without sifting through postings that don't sponsor. Focus on firms with active DOT, municipal, or energy sector contracts, as those tend to drive the most consistent hiring. Reviewing H-1B disclosure data from the Department of Labor can also confirm which North Dakota employers have sponsored engineers in recent years.
Are there state-specific considerations for structural engineers seeking sponsorship in North Dakota?
North Dakota requires structural engineers to hold a Professional Engineer (PE) license for certain project types, which can affect how employers frame job requirements and H-1B petition details. The state's engineering market is heavily tied to transportation funding cycles and energy investment, meaning hiring can be project-driven and seasonal. North Dakota State University in Fargo produces civil engineering graduates and has connections to regional firms, which can be a useful network for international candidates already in the U.S. on OPT.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored structural engineer jobs in North Dakota?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
