Which companies sponsor visas for structural engineers in Alabama?
Engineering and construction firms with active Alabama operations are the most consistent sponsors. Volkert, Brasfield & Gorrie, and national firms like Burns & McDonnell and AECOM have filed H-1B petitions for structural engineering roles in the state. Defense contractors operating around Huntsville, including Jacobs and Tetra Tech, also sponsor structural engineers with relevant project experience.
Which visa types are most common for structural engineer roles in Alabama?
The H-1B is the most common visa for structural engineers in Alabama, as the role typically requires a bachelor's degree or higher in civil or structural engineering, meeting the specialty occupation standard. TN visas are available to Canadian and Mexican nationals under USMCA for engineering roles. Engineers with exceptional credentials may also qualify for the O-1A or EB-1A categories.
Which cities in Alabama have the most structural engineer sponsorship jobs?
Birmingham is Alabama's largest engineering market, with firms concentrated around infrastructure, commercial construction, and industrial projects. Huntsville draws structural engineers through its aerospace and defense sector, particularly around Redstone Arsenal and the broader research corridor. Mobile supports engineering demand through port infrastructure and industrial development along the Gulf Coast.
How to find structural engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Alabama?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles with visa sponsorship, making it easier to identify structural engineer openings in Alabama without sorting through positions that don't support international candidates. You can search by role and state to surface employers actively hiring and sponsoring in Alabama's construction, infrastructure, and aerospace sectors.
Are there any state-specific considerations for structural engineers seeking sponsorship in Alabama?
Alabama requires a Professional Engineer license for certain structural work, so employers may factor in licensure status when evaluating sponsored candidates. Huntsville's concentration of federal defense contractors means some positions require security clearances, which are generally not accessible to visa holders without permanent resident status. DOL prevailing wage requirements apply statewide, and employers must certify wages meet regional standards before filing an H-1B petition.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored structural engineer jobs in Alabama?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
