Job Summary
The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences invites applications for a part-time (0.75 FTE), 12-month, tenure-track, Assistant/Associate/Full Professor position. Appointment at the Assistant Professor rank is anticipated; however, appointment at a promoted rank may be considered depending upon the qualifications of the successful candidate.
Any hiring at the rank of Associate Professor/Professor with indefinite tenure will be subject to a successful out-of-cycle tenure review process: https://academicaffairs.oregonstate.edu/resources-policies-legislation/policies-and-resources/promotion-and-tenure-guidelines/out-cycle.
This position holds the R. S. Yeats Endowed Professorship in Active Tectonics and Earthquake Geology in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) at Oregon State University (OSU). The Yeats Professorship generates funds on an annual basis to be used to develop and maintain a cutting-edge research program in this field of study.
The position is expected to integrate field-generated data with additional information, using analytical and/or computational techniques, to understand processes and patterns of crustal deformation over earthquake-cycle and longer timescales. Potential areas of expertise include, but are not limited to, continental deformation, subduction zones, paleoseismology and paleogeodesy, and fault-zone mechanics. This position will conduct field-based interdisciplinary research that integrates geological and geophysical data with the aim of improving society’s understanding of and resilience to seismic hazards.
This position is expected to demonstrate capabilities and/or high potential for research and teaching excellence that will inspire the next generation of geoscience students and early career researchers. This includes:
1) creatively contributing to teaching undergraduate courses in geology and/or marine geology, as well as graduate courses in specialty,
2) building an international reputation in research in Active Tectonics and Earthquake Geology and a strong externally funded research program, and
3) contributing to ongoing college- and university-wide efforts to improve diversity, equity and inclusion.
CEOAS is an internationally recognized leader in the study of the Earth as an integrated system and is home to one of the world’s leading oceanography programs. It operates numerous state-of-the-art laboratories, two oceanographic research vessels, and several national facilities and centers. The College has an annual research expenditure budget of more than $110 million, with support coming from the National Science Foundation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Department of Energy, other federal agencies, and private foundations. OSU is also one of four lead institutions on the recently funded Cascadia Region Earthquake Science Center (CRESCENT; cascadiaquakes.org), affording the successful applicant with an opportunity to interact with this 5-year initiative to study the Cascadia subduction zone and its associated hazards. OSU will also soon take ownership of a $25M NVIDIA super-computer, which will be a university-wide resource for computational research.
For academic-track positions, it is CEOAS policy to hire faculty on a 12-month, 0.75 FTE appointment (equivalent to the traditional 9-month, 1.0 FTE appointment) where additional salary can be supported by external grants up to 1.0 FTE. Consideration for indefinite tenure is coincident with evaluation for promotion to Associate Professor.
OSU and CEOAS are committed to maintaining and enhancing a collaborative and inclusive community that strives for equity, and equal opportunity. CEOAS faculty are expected to demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion, including efforts promoting equitable outcomes among learners of diverse and underrepresented identity groups (https://diversity.oregonstate.edu/strategic-plan; https://leadership.oregonstate.edu/president/initiatives/moving-forward-together). Faculty are also expected to contribute efforts to improve access to experiential learning opportunities. OSU and CEOAS strive to build and sustain a welcoming, collegial and inclusive campus environment.
CEOAS has approximately 109 faculty, 140 graduate students, and over 1300 undergraduate students. Graduate programs include M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences; Geology; Geography; and an M.S. degree in Marine Resource Management. The college offers undergraduate degrees in Geology, Oceanography, Climate Science, Geography and Geospatial Sciences, and Environmental Sciences as well as several minors and certificate programs.

Search Teaching Assistant Jobs in OregonTeaching Assistant Jobs in Oregon: Frequently Asked Questions
Which employers in Oregon sponsor visas for teaching assistants?
The University of Oregon and Oregon State University are the most active sponsors, routinely hiring international graduate teaching assistants through J-1 visa and H-1B visa programs. Portland State University and Portland Community College also have sponsorship track records. Outside higher education, some K-12 districts in the Portland metro area and Bend have sponsored foreign national teachers and instructional staff through H-1B petitions, though this is less common.
What visa types are most commonly used for teaching assistant roles in Oregon?
J-1 exchange visitor visas are the most common for graduate teaching assistants at Oregon universities, administered through each institution's international programs office. H-1B visas apply when the role meets specialty occupation requirements, which is more typical for instructional coordinators or positions requiring a specific academic degree. F-1 students on OPT can work as teaching assistants temporarily, but long-term sponsorship generally requires J-1 or H-1B status.
Which cities in Oregon have the most teaching assistant sponsorship opportunities?
Eugene and Corvallis generate the highest volume of teaching assistant sponsorship openings due to the presence of the University of Oregon and Oregon State University. Portland follows closely, with Portland State University, Portland Community College, and a larger K-12 district system creating additional openings. Smaller academic communities like Ashland, home to Southern Oregon University, occasionally post sponsored positions but at much lower frequency.
How to find teaching assistant visa sponsorship jobs in Oregon?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to search for teaching assistant roles in Oregon without wading through positions that won't support international candidates. You can filter by state and role type to surface openings at Oregon universities, community colleges, and K-12 employers that have a history of sponsoring international hires. Setting up alerts on Migrate Mate helps you catch new postings at institutions like U of O and OSU quickly.
Are there any Oregon-specific considerations for teaching assistant visa sponsorship?
Oregon's public universities follow federal Department of Labor prevailing wage requirements for H-1B sponsorship, and graduate teaching assistant roles are sometimes classified under collective bargaining agreements, which can affect the sponsorship process and timeline. Oregon also has a strong tradition of graduate employee unions at institutions like the University of Oregon, meaning hiring timelines and contract terms are often structured around academic year cycles. Applicants should plan applications around fall enrollment deadlines.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored teaching assistant jobs in Oregon?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
