Which employers in Wisconsin sponsor visas for teaching assistants?
The University of Wisconsin-Madison is the largest sponsor of teaching assistant visas in the state, followed by UW-Milwaukee, UW-Green Bay, and other UW System campuses. Marquette University and private liberal arts colleges such as Lawrence University and Beloit College also sponsor international teaching assistants, primarily through J-1 visa and H-1B visa programs tied to graduate or faculty appointments.
What visa types are most common for teaching assistant roles in Wisconsin?
J-1 exchange visitor visas are the most common for international teaching assistants at Wisconsin universities, particularly for graduate students enrolled in degree programs. H-1B visas apply when the teaching assistant role is a standalone specialty occupation position rather than part of a degree program. F-1 OPT and CPT can also authorize teaching assistant work for eligible degree-seeking students at Wisconsin institutions.
Which Wisconsin cities have the most teaching assistant visa sponsorship opportunities?
Madison has the highest concentration of teaching assistant sponsorship opportunities in Wisconsin, driven by the University of Wisconsin-Madison's large graduate program enrollment across dozens of departments. Milwaukee is the second-largest market, with UW-Milwaukee and Marquette University both sponsoring international teaching assistants. Green Bay, Oshkosh, and La Crosse offer additional opportunities through their respective UW System campuses.
How to find teaching assistant visa sponsorship jobs in Wisconsin?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find teaching assistant visa sponsorship jobs in Wisconsin, with listings filtered specifically for roles where employers have a documented history of sponsoring international candidates. Because sponsorship availability varies significantly by department and institution, Migrate Mate helps narrow the search to Wisconsin teaching assistant positions where visa support is part of the hiring process rather than an afterthought.
Are there any Wisconsin-specific considerations for teaching assistants seeking visa sponsorship?
Wisconsin's teaching assistant sponsorship activity is heavily tied to the UW System's graduate enrollment cycles, meaning most positions open in spring for fall semester starts. International teaching assistants on J-1 visas must work through their host institution's designated sponsor officer, which at UW-Madison is the International Faculty and Staff Services office. Teaching assistant roles must qualify as specialty occupations to support H-1B petitions, which typically requires a direct connection between the subject taught and a bachelor's-level field.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored teaching assistant jobs in Wisconsin?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
