Which companies sponsor visas for attorneys in Pennsylvania?
Large law firms with Philadelphia headquarters or major offices, including Morgan Lewis, Dechert, Reed Smith, and Ballard Spahr, have established records of sponsoring attorneys on H-1B visas. Corporate legal departments at Pennsylvania-headquartered companies such as Comcast, Lincoln Financial, and PNC Financial Services also sponsor foreign national attorneys, particularly for in-house roles requiring specialized regulatory or transactional expertise.
Which visa types are most common for attorney roles in Pennsylvania?
The H-1B is the most common visa for attorneys in Pennsylvania, as legal practice qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a Juris Doctor degree. Attorneys who have passed a U.S. bar exam and hold the relevant degree are well-positioned for H-1B sponsorship. TN status is available to Canadian and Mexican attorneys under USMCA. O-1A visas are an option for attorneys with demonstrated extraordinary ability or sustained national recognition in their field.
Which cities in Pennsylvania have the most attorney sponsorship jobs?
Philadelphia accounts for the largest share of attorney sponsorship activity in Pennsylvania, driven by its concentration of Am Law 100 firms and major corporate headquarters. Pittsburgh is the second most active market, with significant demand in energy, healthcare, and financial services law. Harrisburg sees demand in regulatory and government affairs work given its role as the state capital, though sponsorship volume there is considerably smaller than in the two major metro areas.
How to find attorney visa sponsorship jobs in Pennsylvania?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to identify Pennsylvania attorney roles where employers are actively willing to sponsor. You can narrow results to practice areas such as corporate, litigation, or healthcare law and to specific cities like Philadelphia or Pittsburgh. Migrate Mate's listings reflect actual sponsorship intent rather than requiring you to manually screen each posting for eligibility.
Are there state-specific considerations for attorney visa sponsorship in Pennsylvania?
Foreign national attorneys must pass the Pennsylvania Bar Examination to practice law independently in the state, which affects visa timing since bar admission typically takes several months after law school graduation. Some firms hire foreign LLM graduates into research or compliance roles that do not require bar admission, which can serve as an entry point. Pennsylvania's strong university pipeline, including Penn Law, Temple Law, and Villanova Law, means employers are accustomed to recruiting international candidates.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored attorney jobs in Pennsylvania?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
