Which companies sponsor visas for backend software engineers in Rhode Island?
Established Rhode Island employers with histories of H-1B sponsorship for backend engineering roles include Fidelity Investments, IGT (International Game Technology), Amica Mutual Insurance, and Citizens Bank. Larger healthcare systems like Lifespan and Brown Medicine also sponsor engineering positions. Defense and government contractors based in the state occasionally hire backend engineers, though sponsorship availability varies by contract and security clearance requirements.
Which visa types are most common for backend software engineer roles in Rhode Island?
The H-1B is the most common visa for backend software engineers in Rhode Island, as these roles consistently meet the specialty occupation standard requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a related technical field. F-1 students from Brown University or URI may work under OPT or STEM OPT before transitioning to H-1B status. L-1B transfers are also used when engineers move from an overseas office to a Rhode Island location.
Which cities in Rhode Island have the most backend software engineer sponsorship jobs?
Providence accounts for the majority of backend software engineer sponsorship activity in Rhode Island, driven by its concentration of financial services firms, insurance companies, and technology employers. East Providence and Warwick also have some presence, largely tied to financial technology and insurance sector offices. The state's small geographic size means most sponsored roles are practically accessible from anywhere in the Providence metro area.
How to find backend software engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Rhode Island?
Migrate Mate aggregates backend software engineer roles from Rhode Island employers that have filed Labor Condition Applications or sponsored H-1B workers, filtering out positions that are unlikely to support international candidates. Searching by role and state on Migrate Mate lets you focus on companies like Fidelity, IGT, and others with documented sponsorship activity, saving time compared to manually screening general job postings that rarely disclose visa sponsorship upfront.
Are there any Rhode Island-specific considerations for backend engineers seeking visa sponsorship?
Rhode Island's tech sector is smaller than neighboring Massachusetts, so the volume of sponsored backend engineering roles is more limited. However, competition can also be lower. Brown University's computer science program and its affiliated research institutions create a pipeline of technically strong candidates, which means employers in Providence are familiar with the H-1B process and international hiring. Prevailing wage requirements apply based on the specific job duties and location, as determined by Department of Labor data for the Providence metropolitan area.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored backend software engineer jobs in Rhode Island?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
