INTRODUCTION
The Department of History, Literature, and the Arts invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor and Writing Coordinator. This position combines program administration, teaching (3/3), and an active research agenda. The Writing Coordinator provides academic leadership for multi-section, high-enrollment writing courses that serve students across all majors, ensuring coherence, quality, and innovation in writing instruction at a time of rapid change in student writing practices, including the adoption of generative AI. In addition to strengthening the writing curriculum, the Coordinator is expected to support the writing component of the Excel Program, which assists first-year students predicted to benefit from additional academic scaffolding, and by providing oversight of the writing component of the Bridge Program, an intensive summer transition experience that helps incoming students build the skills, confidence, and academic readiness needed for success in college-level writing.
This role is central to stabilizing the quality and consistency of GEN106 and other foundational writing courses, strengthening general education assessment, and advancing institutional AI literacy. The position offers a competitive salary with full benefits.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Leadership & Coordination:
- Oversee and coordinate all sections of the required first-year writing course (e.g., GEN106), ensuring consistency in learning outcomes, assignments, and assessment practices.
- Develop, revise, and maintain shared curricular materials, rubrics, and instructional resources.
- Recruit, hire, mentor, and support full-time and adjunct faculty teaching writing courses.
- Collaborate closely with General Education Leadership to implement and strengthen the first-year curriculum.
AI-Integrated Writing Pedagogy & Policy Alignment:
- Lead campus-wide efforts to integrate generative AI literacy into writing instruction, including responsible-use frameworks, assignment design, and faculty development.
- Ensure alignment between writing pedagogy, institutional AI policies, and emerging national best practices.
- Support faculty across disciplines in adapting writing expectations and instructional strategies in response to evolving AI technologies.
Assessment, Accreditation, and Institutional Infrastructure:
- Coordinate general education writing assessment, including data collection, analysis, reporting, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Contribute to accreditation processes by documenting program effectiveness and supporting evidence-based decision-making.
- Work directly with the university’s Excel Program, a key retention initiative supporting first-year students who are predicted to benefit from additional academic scaffolding as they transition into college-level coursework.
- Provide oversight of the writing component of the university’s Bridge Program, which provides an intensive summer transition experience designed to help incoming students strengthen academic skills, build confidence, and prepare for the expectations of college.
- Monitor student learning outcomes and implement strategies to improve student success and retention in writing-intensive courses.
Teaching & Research:
- Teach three courses per semester, including first-year writing and determined in consultation with department chair (3/3 load).
- Maintain an active research agenda in rhetoric and composition, writing studies, AI literacy, scholarship of teaching and learning, or related fields.
- Participate in departmental, college, and university service.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Doctorate in Rhetoric & Composition, Writing Studies, English with a composition focus, or a closely related field (ABD considered with evidence of timely completion).
- Demonstrated experience teaching first-year writing or multi-section writing courses.
- Evidence of innovative, effective teaching and curriculum development.
- Familiarity with writing assessment and general education frameworks.
- Engagement with emerging technologies in writing instruction, including generative AI.
Preferred:
- Experience administering or coordinating a college writing program.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with faculty and academic leadership.
