Which employers in Arizona sponsor visas for teaching assistants?
The University of Arizona and Arizona State University are the most active sponsors, routinely hiring international graduate teaching assistants through J-1 and H-1B programs. Maricopa County Community College District and Tucson Unified School District also have histories of sponsoring qualified international candidates, particularly for specialized roles in bilingual education, science, and mathematics support.
Which visa types are most common for teaching assistant roles in Arizona?
J-1 is the most common visa for graduate teaching assistants at Arizona universities, typically issued through each institution's exchange visitor program. H-1B applies when the role qualifies as a specialty occupation, more common in full-time instructional positions. F-1 OPT and STEM OPT allow students already in Arizona to work as teaching assistants before transitioning to employer-sponsored status.
Which cities in Arizona have the most teaching assistant sponsorship jobs?
Tempe and Tucson lead due to Arizona State University and the University of Arizona, both of which enroll large international graduate student populations who fill teaching assistant roles. Phoenix also generates demand through its K-12 district network and community colleges. Flagstaff, home to Northern Arizona University, is a smaller but consistent source of sponsored teaching assistant positions.
How to find teaching assistant visa sponsorship jobs in Arizona?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles open to visa sponsorship, making it straightforward to search teaching assistant positions across Arizona universities, community colleges, and K-12 districts. Rather than sorting through general job boards, Migrate Mate surfaces employers actively willing to sponsor, which saves time and surfaces opportunities at institutions like ASU, U of A, and Maricopa County colleges.
Are there any Arizona-specific considerations for teaching assistant visa sponsorship?
Arizona's large research university system creates a consistent pipeline for international teaching assistants, but J-1 program eligibility depends heavily on the individual institution's exchange visitor program designation. Arizona's bilingual education needs in districts with large Spanish-speaking student populations can make candidates with dual-language qualifications more competitive. State budget cycles can also affect how many sponsored positions K-12 districts open in a given year.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored teaching assistant jobs in Arizona?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
