Which employers in California sponsor visas for teaching assistants?
University of California campuses (Berkeley, Los Angeles, San Diego, Davis), California State University system schools, Stanford University, and USC are among the most active sponsors. Large K-12 charter networks such as KIPP and Aspire Public Schools have also filed sponsorships for teaching roles. Graduate teaching assistantships at research universities represent the most consistent pipeline for international candidates in California.
Which visa types are most common for teaching assistant roles in California?
The H-1B is the most common employer-sponsored visa for teaching assistants in degree-granting institutions, provided the role qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. J-1 exchange visitor status is also widely used, particularly for graduate-level teaching roles at universities. F-1 students on OPT or STEM OPT may work as teaching assistants before transitioning to a sponsored visa.
Which cities in California have the most teaching assistant sponsorship jobs?
The San Francisco Bay Area leads due to the density of research universities, including UC Berkeley and Stanford. Los Angeles follows closely, with UCLA, USC, and a large K-12 sector driving demand. San Diego is a strong third, anchored by UC San Diego and San Diego State University. Sacramento and the Central Valley also have openings through the CSU system and community college districts.
How to find teaching assistant visa sponsorship jobs in California?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it practical to search for teaching assistant roles in California without sifting through positions that don't sponsor. You can narrow results by location and role type to focus on university departments, K-12 networks, or community colleges actively hiring international candidates. Setting up alerts helps surface new postings quickly in a competitive market.
Are there state-specific considerations for teaching assistants seeking visa sponsorship in California?
California's prevailing wage requirements and its large public university system create a structured environment for sponsored teaching roles. UC and CSU campuses are covered by collective bargaining agreements for graduate student instructors, which can affect eligibility and compensation structure. California's strong international student population also means university HR departments are generally experienced with H-1B and J-1 processes, which can streamline the sponsorship workflow.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored teaching assistant jobs in California?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
