Which employers in Michigan sponsor visas for teaching assistants?
The University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and Wayne State University are the most active sponsors for teaching assistant roles in Michigan. These research-intensive institutions regularly hire international graduate students and academic staff into TA positions and have dedicated international offices experienced in processing H-1B, J-1, and F-1 OPT sponsorships. Smaller liberal arts colleges and community colleges sponsor far less frequently.
Which visa types are most common for teaching assistant roles in Michigan?
J-1 is the most common visa for teaching assistants in Michigan, particularly for exchange visitor programs at universities. F-1 OPT and STEM OPT extension are used by international students already enrolled at Michigan institutions. H-1B sponsorship applies to full-time or non-student TA roles that qualify as specialty occupations, though this is less common for entry-level assistantships and requires employer petition.
Which cities in Michigan have the most teaching assistant sponsorship jobs?
Ann Arbor and East Lansing account for the largest share of teaching assistant sponsorship opportunities in Michigan, driven by the University of Michigan and Michigan State University respectively. Detroit is a secondary hub through Wayne State University. These three cities together host the majority of Michigan's research university infrastructure, which is where international TA hiring is most concentrated.
How to find teaching assistant visa sponsorship jobs in Michigan?
Migrate Mate filters teaching assistant jobs in Michigan specifically by visa sponsorship availability, so you're not sorting through postings that won't support international candidates. Search the Michigan teaching assistant category on Migrate Mate to see current openings at universities and institutions that have an active sponsorship history. University departmental postings and graduate admissions offices are also worth monitoring directly alongside Migrate Mate.
Are there any Michigan-specific considerations for teaching assistant visa sponsorship?
Michigan's teaching assistant market is heavily tied to graduate enrollment cycles at its major public universities, meaning most positions open in spring and summer ahead of the fall semester. International candidates should confirm whether a role is classified as a student assistantship or a staff appointment, since this affects which visa category applies. Michigan's large international student population at flagship universities means immigration support offices are generally well-resourced and experienced.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored teaching assistant jobs in Michigan?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
