Which employers in Illinois sponsor visas for teaching assistants?
The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, University of Chicago, Northwestern University, and Illinois Institute of Technology are among the most active sponsors for teaching assistant roles in Illinois. Large public university systems tend to have established immigration support offices that regularly process H-1B and J-1 visa sponsorship for academic and instructional staff, including teaching assistants in graduate programs.
Which visa types are most commonly used for teaching assistant roles in Illinois?
The J-1 exchange visitor visa and H-1B specialty occupation visa are the most common pathways for teaching assistants in Illinois. J-1 is frequently used for university-based roles given institutional exchange agreements. H-1B applies when the position qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. F-1 OPT is also used by current international students filling on-campus teaching assistant roles.
Which cities in Illinois have the most teaching assistant visa sponsorship jobs?
Champaign-Urbana leads due to the University of Illinois's large graduate programs across engineering, sciences, and humanities. Chicago follows closely, with the University of Chicago, DePaul University, Loyola University Chicago, and Illinois Institute of Technology all hiring teaching assistants. Evanston, home to Northwestern University, is another consistent source of sponsorship-eligible teaching assistant positions.
How to find teaching assistant visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate aggregates teaching assistant roles in Illinois that are open to visa sponsorship, making it easier to filter opportunities at universities and colleges without manually searching each institution's careers page. Positions at the University of Illinois system, Northwestern, and DePaul appear regularly. Searching by role and filtering to Illinois on Migrate Mate surfaces current openings that explicitly support international candidates.
Are there any Illinois-specific considerations for teaching assistant visa sponsorship?
Illinois universities with designated school status for F-1 students often hire international graduate teaching assistants under OPT or CPT before transitioning them to H-1B. The University of Illinois system has one of the largest international student populations in the country, which means institutional experience with sponsorship is well established. Teaching assistants in STEM fields at Illinois universities may also benefit from OPT STEM extensions, extending work authorization before H-1B filing.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored teaching assistant jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
