Which companies sponsor visas for software engineers in South Carolina?
Several South Carolina employers have active H-1B sponsorship histories for software engineers. Blackbaud, the nonprofit technology company headquartered in Charleston, and Benefitfocus, a benefits management software firm, appear regularly in Department of Labor disclosure data. Boeing's North Charleston facility and global companies with South Carolina operations, including BMW Manufacturing in Spartanburg, have also filed H-1B petitions for software engineering roles.
Which visa types are most common for software engineer roles in South Carolina?
The H-1B is the most common work visa for software engineers in South Carolina, as the role consistently qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or a related field. Candidates from Canada and Mexico may qualify for the TN visa under the USMCA. Australian citizens can pursue the E-3 visa. Those with extraordinary ability may be eligible for the O-1 visa.
Which cities in South Carolina have the most software engineer sponsorship jobs?
Charleston has the highest concentration of software engineer sponsorship activity, driven by technology firms, defense contractors, and financial software companies. Columbia, home to the University of South Carolina and a growing state government technology sector, is the second-largest hiring market. Greenville is an emerging hub, with manufacturing technology companies and several corporate technology centers establishing operations there in recent years.
How to find software engineer visa sponsorship jobs in South Carolina?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it easier to identify South Carolina software engineer roles where employers are open to sponsoring international candidates. Rather than sifting through general job postings, you can focus on companies with verified sponsorship history in the state, including employers in Charleston's fintech sector, Columbia's government technology space, and Greenville's manufacturing technology corridor.
Are there any state-specific considerations for software engineers seeking sponsorship in South Carolina?
South Carolina's technology sector is heavily tied to aerospace, defense, and financial software, which means many software engineer roles intersect with federal contracting. Some federal contractor positions require security clearances, which can complicate or limit sponsorship options for non-citizens. Additionally, Clemson University and the University of South Carolina generate a pipeline of local engineering graduates, so international candidates benefit from targeting employers with established international hiring programs.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored software engineer jobs in South Carolina?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
