Which companies sponsor visas for systems engineers in South Carolina?
Boeing's North Charleston facility is one of the most active sponsors, given its large-scale 787 Dreamliner production operation. Defense contractors including Booz Allen Hamilton, Leidos, and SAIC also sponsor systems engineers, particularly for roles supporting the state's military installations. Tech-focused employers in Columbia's growing corridor, such as Capgemini and Deloitte, have filed H-1B visa petitions for systems engineering positions as well.
Which visa types are most common for systems engineer roles in South Carolina?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for systems engineers in South Carolina, as the role consistently meets the specialty occupation standard requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in engineering or a related technical field. Candidates with Canadian or Mexican citizenship may qualify for the TN visa under the NAFTA-successor USMCA. Australians can pursue the E-3 visa. L-1 visa transfers are also used by multinational defense and aerospace contractors.
Which cities in South Carolina have the most systems engineer sponsorship jobs?
North Charleston leads due to Boeing's 787 production campus and the concentration of defense contractors supporting nearby Joint Base Charleston. Columbia, as the state capital and home to Fort Jackson, supports systems engineering roles in government IT and defense. Greenville has grown as an advanced manufacturing hub with employers like Michelin and BMW, which occasionally sponsor systems engineers for automation and integration work.
How to find systems engineer visa sponsorship jobs in South Carolina?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters systems engineer roles in South Carolina by visa sponsorship availability, so you're not sorting through listings from employers who won't sponsor. The platform is particularly useful for identifying aerospace, defense, and manufacturing employers in the North Charleston, Columbia, and Greenville areas who have an established history of filing H-1B or other work visa petitions for engineering roles.
Are there any state-specific considerations for systems engineers pursuing visa sponsorship in South Carolina?
South Carolina's defense sector means many systems engineer roles involve work on government contracts, which can introduce security clearance requirements. Clearances generally require U.S. citizenship or permanent residency, so roles at prime defense contractors may be off-limits for visa holders without a green card. Civilian roles at commercial aerospace employers like Boeing or automotive manufacturers tend to be more accessible to H-1B and similar visa holders without clearance requirements.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored systems engineer jobs in South Carolina?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
