Search Attorney Jobs in TexasAttorney Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies sponsor visas for attorneys in Texas?
Large law firms with Texas offices are among the most active sponsors, including Baker Botts, Vinson and Elkins, Haynes and Boone, and Sidley Austin. In-house legal departments at corporations like ExxonMobil, AT&T, and Dell Technologies also sponsor attorneys. Sponsorship is more common for associates in corporate, energy, and transactional practices than for general litigation roles.
Which visa types are most common for attorney roles in Texas?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa for foreign-trained attorneys in Texas, as law qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Attorneys with extraordinary distinction may qualify for the O-1A. Some foreign lawyers working in non-practice roles such as legal consulting or compliance may also be sponsored under the TN visa if they are Canadian or Mexican nationals.
Which cities in Texas have the most attorney sponsorship jobs?
Houston leads in attorney sponsorship opportunities, driven by its energy sector and the concentration of AmLaw 100 firms with offices there. Dallas follows closely, with strong corporate, finance, and real estate legal markets. Austin has grown significantly as technology companies have expanded their in-house legal teams. San Antonio has a smaller but active legal market with opportunities in healthcare and government contracting.
How to find attorney visa sponsorship jobs in Texas?
Migrate Mate filters attorney roles in Texas specifically by visa sponsorship availability, so you can search without sorting through positions that don't offer sponsorship. The platform is built for international job seekers and surfaces law firm associate positions and in-house counsel roles across Houston, Dallas, and Austin where employers have a documented history of sponsoring foreign national attorneys.
Are there any Texas-specific considerations for attorneys seeking visa sponsorship?
Texas requires attorneys to pass the Texas Bar Examination to practice law independently, regardless of immigration status. Foreign-trained lawyers who have not yet passed the bar often enter Texas legal markets in compliance, legal operations, or research roles, which can still qualify for H-1B sponsorship. The University of Texas School of Law and Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law are common recruiting pipelines for firms sponsoring foreign national attorneys.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored attorney jobs in Texas?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
