Which cities in Texas have the most healthcare J-1 sponsorship jobs?
Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth account for the largest share of healthcare J-1 positions in Texas, driven by high concentrations of academic medical centers and large hospital networks. San Antonio has significant activity through its military and VA-affiliated medical institutions, while Austin's expanding health system has increased sponsorship activity in recent years. Smaller markets like Galveston and Lubbock also host J-1 programs tied to university medical schools.
What types of healthcare roles typically qualify for J-1 sponsorship in Texas?
J-1 sponsorship in Texas healthcare most commonly covers roles in graduate medical education (residency and fellowship programs), clinical research, and academic medicine. Allied health positions in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and medical imaging are also sponsored through certain exchange programs. Are there any Texas-specific considerations for J-1 healthcare sponsorship?
Texas has a large proportion of J-1 positions tied to academic medical centers and teaching hospitals, which means many roles are structured around formal residency, fellowship, or research programs with defined start dates and program durations. Exchange visitors in clinical roles must also be aware that the J-1 two-year home residency requirement may apply, particularly for positions supported by government funding, which can affect future visa changes. Consulting a qualified immigration attorney about your specific program is advisable.
