Overview:
The Safety Specialist is responsible for managing field compliance processes and delivering safety training across USS locations. This role ensures adherence to safety regulations, leads safety-focused meetings, and engages in proactive safety management to maintain a hazard-free workplace. The position requires extensive fieldwork and effective communication skills to translate company and client safety directives into actionable field practices.
Responsibilities:
Field Compliance and Safety Training:
- Lead safety stand-downs and huddle meetings to communicate and reinforce safety protocols.
- Conduct behavior-based safety observations, identifying at-risk behaviors and conditions.
- Develop and deliver toolbox trainings and flash reports to inform teams on safety updates and best practices.
Incident and Hazard Management:
- Perform incident investigations focused on root cause analysis and hazard elimination.
- Conduct job safety analyses, documenting hazards and implementing corrective actions.
- Regularly assess accident data and field operations to identify safety risks and improvement areas.
Client and Regulatory Compliance:
- Interpret and implement client safety requirements and USS directives in the field.
- Ensure adherence to Federal, State, and local regulations, including DOT, OSHA, and EPA standards.
- Serve as a resource on compliance rules, operating procedures, and regulatory changes.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Prepare and maintain reports on safety observations, incident investigations, and compliance audits.
- Track effectiveness of safety processes and report outcomes to ensure continuous improvement.
- Maintain proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite to create, store, and share documentation.
Defensive Driving and Certification Support:
- Serve as a certified defensive driving instructor, providing training as needed.
- Maintain OSHA 501 and/or 502 certifications and deliver compliance training based on company guidelines.
This position operates with minimal direct supervision.

This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
4 Year / Bachelor's Degree in related field such as Construction Management, Project Management or Governance, Risk, and Compliance
Experience
Minimum of 4 years of experience in Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) compliance, preferably within field operations or transportation environments.
ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Regulatory Knowledge: Proficient in understanding and interpreting safety regulations, including DOT, OSHA, and EPA standards, with the ability to apply these in a field setting.
- Communication and Training: Excellent presentation, verbal, and written communication skills, able to convey complex safety concepts effectively to diverse audiences.
- Problem Solving and Analysis: Strong analytical skills to assess safety risks, troubleshoot issues, and implement solutions based on sound judgment and data-driven insights.
- Technical Proficiency: Skilled in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) for documentation, training content creation, and reporting. Familiarity with incident tracking systems is a plus.
- Interpersonal Skills: Effective at building rapport and motivating team members to uphold safety standards; skilled in conflict resolution and providing constructive feedback.
- Independent Work Ethic: Self-motivated, able to operate autonomously, and manage responsibilities effectively with minimal supervision.
- Travel Requirement: Local travel to fields of assigned market/region.
- Driver’s License: Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License.
- Leadership and Personal Attributes: Exhibits strong interpersonal and motivational skills, capable of fostering a safety-focused culture across field teams. Demonstrates initiative and proactive approach to safety, taking ownership of compliance and field safety outcomes. Ability to make independent decisions in compliance management, leveraging regulatory knowledge and best practices.

SALARY RANGE:
$66,700.00 – $96,700.00 / year
