ABOUT THE ROLE:
Backcountry is looking for a Marketing Copywriter to create compelling copy that inspires customers to get outside and drives business results across Backcountry, Competitive Cyclist, Steep & Cheap, and our other brands. As Marketing Copywriter, you will write messaging across major marketing channels, ensuring each brand's unique voice stays consistent while adapting your writing to different audiences, campaigns, and customer journeys.
Beyond writing, you will be part of a team thoughtfully adopting AI in editorial workflows—using prompt libraries and approved tools, contributing ideas for improving processes, and helping the team work faster without sacrificing creativity, accuracy, or brand voice. Success means consistently delivering polished, on-brand copy on deadline.
This is a lean team. You will own a lot, move fast, and make decisions with full end-to-end responsibility.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
- Write compelling, high-performing marketing copy across email, SMS, paid social, display, landing pages, site merchandising, and other customer touchpoints for Backcountry and Competitive Cyclist.
- Adapt messaging to each brand's distinct voice and audience—from Backcountry's outdoor enthusiasts to Competitive Cyclist's performance-driven riders—while tailoring copy for each marketing channel.
- Uphold brand voice, tone, and editorial standards across campaign marketing, following established style guidelines and flagging inconsistencies or gaps to the Managing Editor.
- Optimize copy using customer insights, SEO best practices, A/B test results, and conversion data to continually improve campaign performance and engagement.
- Use AI tools as part of your daily writing workflow, following the team's prompt libraries, best practices, and quality standards to work faster without sacrificing creativity or brand integrity.
- Contribute ideas as the team tests new AI tools and workflows, sharing what works to produce better work, faster.
- Participate in peer copy reviews, giving and receiving thoughtful feedback that strengthens quality, consistency, and the team's overall craft.
- Partner closely with Merchandising, Creative, Marketing, eCommerce, and SEO teams to deliver cohesive campaigns, communicate timelines clearly, and proactively identify risks before launch.
- Balance speed with editorial excellence, delivering polished, accurate copy under tight deadlines while maintaining exceptional attention to detail.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- 2+ years of professional copywriting or editorial experience, preferably in ecommerce, retail, or consumer marketing.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills with a demonstrated ability to adapt tone across brands and channels.
- Experience writing high-performing marketing copy across email, digital marketing, web, and paid media.
- Experience using generative AI tools (such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or similar) in writing workflows, paired with strong editorial judgment and quality control.
- Willingness to learn and follow established AI prompts, workflows, and documentation used in content production.
- Working knowledge of SEO, conversion copywriting, and performance-driven marketing best practices.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines consistently.
- Collaborative mindset with experience partnering across creative, marketing, merchandising, and ecommerce teams.

- Bike riding and cycling-specific writing experience.
