Which companies sponsor visas for hospitalists in Virginia?
Inova Health System in Northern Virginia, VCU Health and Bon Secours in Richmond, Sentara Healthcare in Hampton Roads, and HCA Virginia hospitals are among the health systems that have historically sponsored visas for hospitalist physicians. Large academic medical centers and regional health networks are the most active sponsors, as they have dedicated HR infrastructure to manage H-1B visa and J-1 visa waiver processes.
Which visa types are most common for hospitalist roles in Virginia?
H-1B is the most common visa for hospitalists in Virginia, as the role qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a medical degree. J-1 Conrad 30 waivers are also widely used, allowing international medical graduates who completed residency on J-1 status to work in designated shortage areas across Virginia, including parts of Southwest Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. Some positions may also be eligible for O-1 visa or TN visas depending on physician nationality and qualifications.
Which cities in Virginia have the most hospitalist sponsorship jobs?
Northern Virginia (Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria) has the highest concentration of hospitalist openings due to the Inova system and proximity to Washington D.C. Richmond is the second major hub, anchored by VCU Medical Center and Bon Secours. The Hampton Roads area, including Norfolk and Virginia Beach, also sees consistent hospitalist hiring through Sentara Healthcare and Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters.
How to find hospitalist visa sponsorship jobs in Virginia?
Migrate Mate lists hospitalist positions in Virginia filtered specifically for roles offering visa sponsorship, saving you from sorting through listings that won't support international candidates. You can filter by state and specialty to surface openings at Virginia health systems. Because hospitalist demand in Virginia is driven by large networks like Inova and Sentara, new sponsored roles appear regularly and are worth checking frequently on Migrate Mate.
Are there state-specific considerations for hospitalists pursuing visa sponsorship in Virginia?
Virginia participates in the Conrad 30 J-1 waiver program, which sets aside 30 slots annually for physicians willing to work in Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs). Positions in underserved regions of Virginia, including parts of the Appalachian Southwest, often come with faster sponsorship pathways through this program. Virginia also has no state income tax on military retirement, but physicians should note that licensure through the Virginia Board of Medicine is required before employment begins.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored hospitalist jobs in Virginia?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
