Which companies sponsor visas for social workers in Virginia?
Large health systems are among the most active sponsors for social work roles in Virginia. Inova Health System, Sentara Healthcare, and VCU Health have each filed Labor Condition Applications for social worker positions. Nonprofit behavioral health organizations and federally qualified health centers operating across Northern Virginia and Richmond also sponsor international candidates, particularly for licensed clinical social worker roles tied to specific program funding.
Which visa types are most common for social work roles in Virginia?
The H-1B is the most common visa for social workers in Virginia, as licensed clinical social work positions typically qualify as specialty occupations requiring at least a master's degree in social work. The TN visa is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals whose roles meet the qualifying criteria. Some positions at nonprofits or government-affiliated agencies may also support J-1 visa exchange visitor programs depending on the employer's authorization.
Which cities in Virginia have the most social work sponsorship jobs?
Northern Virginia, particularly Arlington and Fairfax County, has the highest concentration of sponsored social work roles due to the density of federal contractors, health systems, and international NGOs in the region. Richmond is a strong secondary market, anchored by VCU Health and state government agencies. Virginia Beach and Norfolk in the Hampton Roads area also have notable demand through Sentara Healthcare and regional behavioral health providers.
How to find social work visa sponsorship jobs in Virginia?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters social work jobs in Virginia by visa sponsorship eligibility, saving you the time of screening listings manually. You can browse roles filtered to Virginia and specific social work titles, which is particularly useful given that sponsorship availability varies significantly between health systems, nonprofits, and government-affiliated employers across the state.
Are there any Virginia-specific considerations for social workers seeking visa sponsorship?
Virginia requires licensure through the Virginia Board of Social Work, and employers sponsoring H-1B candidates will typically expect applicants to hold or be eligible for a Licensed Clinical Social Worker credential. Positions funded through Virginia Medicaid or state contracts may have additional compliance requirements that affect hiring timelines. Candidates with a master's in social work from a CSWE-accredited program are best positioned, as this directly supports the specialty occupation classification needed for H-1B approval.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored social work jobs in Virginia?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
