Which companies sponsor visas for registered nurses in Washington DC?
The most active sponsors in Washington DC include MedStar Washington Hospital Center, George Washington University Hospital, Children's National Hospital, and Howard University Hospital. Federal facilities such as the NIH Clinical Center also hire internationally trained nurses, though federal employment eligibility requirements vary. Academic medical centers in the District tend to have established international hiring pipelines and HR teams experienced with the sponsorship process.
Which visa types are most common for registered nurse roles in Washington DC?
Most registered nurses sponsored in Washington DC come through the EB-3 immigrant visa category, which is the standard employment-based green card pathway for skilled workers. Some employers use the H-1B for advanced practice roles that meet specialty occupation requirements, though staff-level RN positions often do not qualify. The EB-3 route typically involves PERM labor certification filed by the employer before the green card petition, and processing timelines vary by country of birth due to per-country visa backlogs.
How to find registered nurse visa sponsorship jobs in Washington DC?
Migrate Mate is designed specifically for this search. You can filter by Washington DC and the registered nurse role to see employers actively posting visa sponsorship positions in the District. Because sponsorship availability changes as hospitals adjust hiring budgets, checking Migrate Mate regularly gives you a current view of which health systems in DC are open to sponsoring international nurses rather than relying on outdated listings.
Which areas in Washington DC have the most registered nurse sponsorship jobs?
Washington DC is a single city-district, so sponsorship jobs are concentrated around its major hospital corridors: the NW quadrant near Georgetown and GWU Medical Center, the NoMa and Capitol Hill areas near MedStar facilities, and the Congress Heights corridor anchored by United Medical Center. The NIH campus sits just across the border in Bethesda, Maryland, and some nurses working near DC borders also consider positions at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington or Inova Fairfax in the broader metro.
Are there any DC-specific considerations for registered nurses seeking visa sponsorship?
DC nurses must hold a license issued by the DC Board of Nursing, which is separate from Maryland and Virginia licenses even though all three jurisdictions border each other. International nurses should confirm license portability early, as VisaScreen certification from CGFNS is also required for most EB-3 sponsored positions. DC's high cost of living influences prevailing wage determinations under DOL requirements, which can affect how employers structure sponsored positions at different experience levels.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored registered nurse jobs in Washington DC?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
