Which companies and institutions sponsor visas for research associates in Wisconsin?
The University of Wisconsin-Madison is the largest sponsor of research associate visas in the state, filing H-1B and J-1 petitions across life sciences, engineering, and social sciences. Marshfield Clinic Research Institute, Medical College of Wisconsin, and GE Healthcare's Wisconsin operations have also sponsored research roles. Large pharmaceutical and ag-biotech employers in the Madison area appear regularly in federal LCA disclosure data for research associate positions.
Which visa types are most common for research associate roles in Wisconsin?
The H-1B is the most common work visa for research associates in Wisconsin, covering roles that require a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field such as biology, chemistry, or engineering. The J-1 research scholar category is also widely used, particularly at UW-Madison and other academic institutions. Some postdoctoral research associate roles use OPT or STEM OPT as a bridge while an H-1B petition is pending.
Which cities in Wisconsin have the most research associate sponsorship jobs?
Madison accounts for the clear majority of research associate sponsorship activity in Wisconsin, driven by UW-Madison, the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery, and a growing cluster of biotech and life sciences firms. Milwaukee is the second-largest market, anchored by the Medical College of Wisconsin and Marquette University. Marshfield, while smaller, stands out as a research hub due to the Marshfield Clinic Research Institute's active clinical and population health research programs.
How to find research associate visa sponsorship jobs in Wisconsin?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters research associate postings by visa sponsorship status, so you're not sifting through listings from employers who won't sponsor. For Wisconsin, focus your search on Madison and Milwaukee, and look for postings tied to academic medical centers, R1 universities, and life sciences companies. Migrate Mate lets you filter by role and state to surface relevant openings efficiently.
Are there any Wisconsin-specific considerations for research associates seeking visa sponsorship?
Wisconsin's research associate market is heavily tied to academic and nonprofit institutions, which are cap-exempt for H-1B purposes. This means employers like UW-Madison can file H-1B petitions year-round without waiting for the annual lottery. Candidates should be aware that DOL prevailing wage requirements apply to all sponsored positions, and Wisconsin's research hubs have an active pipeline of international graduate students transitioning from OPT to H-1B through university or affiliated employer sponsorship.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored research associate jobs in Wisconsin?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
