Target employers with H-1B filing history
Companies that have filed H-1B petitions before understand the process and are less likely to withdraw an offer over sponsorship concerns. Prioritize employers with a demonstrated track record of sponsoring software and API-focused engineering roles.
Make your degree field explicit on your resume
H-1B approval for API Engineer roles depends on establishing a specialty occupation. A degree in computer science, software engineering, or a directly related field strengthens the petition. Ambiguous degree titles can trigger RFEs, so spell out the field clearly.
Highlight API-specific technical depth
USCIS scrutinizes whether the role genuinely requires a specialized degree. Listing REST, GraphQL, gRPC, and specific integration experience signals technical complexity that supports the specialty occupation argument, making your petition harder to challenge.
Engage the employer early on LCA timing
Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor before submitting your H-1B petition. Confirming they understand this step early prevents delays, especially if your start date or OPT expiration creates a tight filing window.
Consider cap-exempt employers if lottery timing is a problem
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and certain government entities are exempt from the H-1B cap and lottery. API engineering roles exist at these organizations, and a cap-exempt offer means you can start without waiting for an October 1 start date.
Use Migrate Mate to filter for verified sponsoring employers
Not every job listing that sounds open to sponsorship actually is. Migrate Mate surfaces API Engineer roles from employers with confirmed sponsorship intent, saving you from applying to positions where the answer was always going to be no.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an API Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, in most cases. USCIS looks for roles where a bachelor's degree in a specific field is a normal minimum requirement. API Engineer positions typically require computer science, software engineering, or a related degree, which satisfies that standard. Roles that accept any bachelor's degree regardless of field are more likely to face an RFE.
What visa types are available for API Engineers beyond the H-1B?
Australian citizens can apply for the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and a far less competitive annual cap. Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify under TN visa status. Those with exceptional achievements in software engineering may be eligible for the O-1A. Each pathway has different employer obligations, processing timelines, and renewal rules.
Does my degree field matter, or is any computer science adjacent degree acceptable?
The degree field needs to align with the specific role. A computer science or software engineering degree is the clearest fit for an API Engineer petition. Information systems or electrical engineering degrees can work if the coursework is relevant. A business or unrelated degree supporting an API engineering role will likely trigger an RFE and require additional documentation.
How do I find API Engineer jobs where the employer is actually willing to sponsor?
Sponsorship willingness is rarely stated clearly in job postings. Migrate Mate focuses specifically on roles from employers who sponsor work visas, so you can filter for API Engineer positions without guessing. Applying through a targeted list is significantly more efficient than cold-applying to general postings and asking about sponsorship after the fact.
Can I switch employers after getting H-1B sponsorship as an API Engineer?
Yes. H-1B visa portability allows you to start working for a new employer once they file a new H-1B petition on your behalf, without waiting for approval, as long as you have been in valid H-1B status for at least 180 days. The new employer must file before your current status expires, and the new role must also qualify as a specialty occupation.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Api Engineer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
