Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a Clinical Informatics Specialist
Target large health systems over smaller clinics
Academic medical centers and integrated health systems like Kaiser, Mayo Clinic, and VA hospitals sponsor H-1B visas far more consistently than small practices. They have established immigration infrastructure and dedicated HR teams who manage the process regularly.
Align your degree to the specialty occupation standard
USCIS requires a direct connection between your degree field and the role. A background in health informatics, clinical data science, nursing informatics, or biomedical engineering maps cleanly. A general IT degree alone may require supporting documentation to satisfy the specialty occupation requirement.
Highlight EHR certifications in your application
Epic, Cerner, or Oracle Health certifications signal job-ready technical depth to sponsoring employers. They also strengthen the specialty occupation argument for your H-1B petition by demonstrating that specialized, not generalist, knowledge is required for the role.
Ask about cap-exempt sponsorship if applying to hospitals affiliated with universities
Hospital systems affiliated with academic institutions may qualify as cap-exempt H-1B employers. That means no lottery, no April filing deadline, and year-round hiring. It's worth asking HR directly whether the entity holds cap-exempt status before accepting an offer.
Document clinical experience separately from IT experience
Informatics roles blend clinical and technical skills, and visa petitions benefit from presenting both clearly. A support letter from a supervising physician or clinical director confirming your hands-on healthcare exposure strengthens both your resume and your petition package significantly.
Use Migrate Mate to filter for verified sponsoring employers
Sponsorship willingness varies widely across health systems, and job postings rarely confirm it upfront. Migrate Mate filters roles by employers with confirmed sponsorship history, saving you from applying to positions where sponsorship was never on the table to begin with.

Find Clinical Informatics Specialist JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do Clinical Informatics Specialist roles qualify as H-1B specialty occupations?
Yes. Clinical Informatics Specialist positions generally satisfy the H-1B specialty occupation requirement because they typically demand at minimum a bachelor's degree in health informatics, computer science, nursing informatics, or a closely related field. USCIS has approved petitions for this title consistently, particularly when the role involves EHR implementation, clinical data analysis, or systems integration rather than general IT support.
Does my degree field matter for visa sponsorship in this role?
It matters significantly. USCIS looks for a direct and logical connection between your degree and the job duties. Degrees in health informatics, clinical data science, biomedical informatics, or nursing with an informatics focus map cleanly. A general business or unrelated IT degree may work if you have graduate-level training in a qualifying field, but expect the employer's immigration attorney to build a more detailed evidentiary argument.
Are clinical informatics positions common at cap-exempt employers?
More than most fields. Many Clinical Informatics Specialists work at university-affiliated hospitals, VA medical centers, or federally qualified health centers, all of which may qualify as cap-exempt H-1B employers. Cap-exempt status means no lottery and no annual cap, so sponsorship can happen at any point in the year. Always confirm the employing legal entity's cap-exempt status with HR before assuming it applies.
Can I get an O-1 visa as a Clinical Informatics Specialist?
It's possible for candidates with a strong publication record, conference presentations, EHR implementation leadership on large-scale systems, or recognized contributions to clinical informatics standards. The O-1A standard requires extraordinary ability demonstrated through awards, peer-reviewed publications, or expert roles in the field. Most entry- and mid-level informatics professionals won't meet this bar, but senior specialists with national-level visibility may qualify.
Where can I find Clinical Informatics Specialist jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Most general job boards don't filter by sponsorship willingness, so you spend significant time applying to roles where it was never available. Migrate Mate is built specifically for visa-required candidates and surfaces Clinical Informatics Specialist positions from employers with confirmed sponsorship history. Filtering by sponsorship status from the start focuses your effort on opportunities that can actually move forward.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Clinical Informatics Specialist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
