Target clinical and research-focused CPHT roles
Pharmaceutical companies, clinical research organizations, and hospital systems are more likely to sponsor CPHTs in specialized roles like clinical trials coordination, drug safety monitoring, or regulatory compliance than retail pharmacy positions.
Emphasize your bachelor's degree requirement in applications
For H-1B eligibility, highlight roles specifically requiring a pharmacy, chemistry, or life sciences degree. Generic technician positions that accept any bachelor's degree typically don't qualify for sponsorship.
Consider pharmaceutical manufacturing and quality control
Manufacturing facilities often need CPHTs for quality assurance, batch testing, and regulatory documentation. These roles frequently require specialized education and may justify H-1B sponsorship from larger pharmaceutical companies.
Look for positions at research hospitals and academic medical centers
Teaching hospitals and medical centers often sponsor H-1Bs for specialized pharmacy technician roles in clinical research, investigational drug services, or specialized compounding that require advanced pharmaceutical knowledge.
Highlight specialized certifications beyond basic CPHT
Additional certifications in sterile compounding, chemotherapy preparation, or nuclear pharmacy can strengthen your case for specialty occupation status and make you more attractive to potential sponsors.
Apply early in the fiscal year for cap-subject positions
Most CPHT H-1B positions are cap-subject, meaning they're part of the annual lottery. Submit applications in March for the best chance at selection in the following year's allocation.

Find CPHT JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do CPHT roles qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship?
CPHT roles can qualify for H-1B sponsorship if they meet the specialty occupation standard, meaning they require a bachelor's degree in a specific field like pharmacy, chemistry, or life sciences. Retail pharmacy technician positions typically don't qualify, but clinical research, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and specialized hospital roles often do when they require advanced pharmaceutical knowledge.
What degree do I need for H-1B sponsorship as a CPHT?
You typically need a bachelor's degree in pharmacy, pharmaceutical sciences, chemistry, biology, or a closely related field. The degree must be directly related to the specialized CPHT role you're applying for. Some positions may accept degrees in health sciences or biomedical engineering if the job duties involve specialized pharmaceutical tasks.
Which employers are most likely to sponsor CPHTs for H-1B visas?
Pharmaceutical manufacturers, clinical research organizations, biotech companies, and large hospital systems are most likely to sponsor CPHTs. These employers often need specialized pharmacy technicians for drug development, clinical trials, quality control, or investigational drug services that justify H-1B sponsorship requirements.
Can I get an H-1B for a retail pharmacy technician position?
Retail pharmacy technician positions rarely qualify for H-1B sponsorship because they typically don't require a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Most retail positions accept any bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, which doesn't meet the specialty occupation standard required for H-1B approval.
What's the approval rate for CPHT H-1B petitions?
USCIS doesn't publish approval rates by specific job title, but pharmacy technician H-1B petitions face scrutiny because many positions don't clearly require specialized knowledge. Success rates are higher for roles in pharmaceutical research, manufacturing, or clinical settings where the specialty occupation requirement is clearer.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored CPHT jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
