Target academic medical centers
University hospitals and academic centers frequently sponsor maternal-fetal medicine physicians for H-1B and green cards, especially for research-heavy positions with NIH funding.
Emphasize subspecialty board certification
ABOG board certification in maternal-fetal medicine strengthens H-1B specialty occupation arguments and demonstrates the advanced training employers need for complex cases.
Consider O-1 for research achievements
Publications in high-impact journals, speaking engagements, or leadership in maternal-fetal medicine societies can support O-1 applications for exceptional physicians.
Document clinical volume requirements
High-risk pregnancy management experience and specific procedural competencies help justify the specialized nature of maternal-fetal medicine positions for visa applications.
Plan around fellowship timing
Fellowship programs often provide institutional support for visa transitions. Coordinate with program directors about sponsorship timing and post-fellowship employment arrangements.

Find Maternal-Fetal Medicine Physician JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do maternal-fetal medicine physicians qualify for H-1B visas?
Yes, maternal-fetal medicine physicians qualify for H-1B visas as the role requires specialized medical training beyond general obstetrics. Board certification in maternal-fetal medicine and completion of an accredited fellowship program satisfy the specialty occupation requirements. Most positions also require J-1 waiver completion if you trained on a J-1 visa.
How to find Maternal-Fetal Medicine Physician jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find Maternal-Fetal Medicine Physician positions with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting international medical professionals with sponsoring employers. Focus on large hospital systems, academic medical centers, and specialty women's health clinics that commonly sponsor H-1B, O-1, and EB-2 visas for subspecialty physicians. These organizations often have established visa sponsorship programs for high-demand maternal-fetal medicine specialists.
What degree requirements apply for visa sponsorship?
You need an MD or equivalent foreign medical degree, plus completion of an ACGME-accredited maternal-fetal medicine fellowship. USMLE Steps 1, 2, and 3 passage is required. Board certification or eligibility in maternal-fetal medicine through ABOG is typically required by employers for H-1B sponsorship.
Which visa categories work best for maternal-fetal medicine physicians?
H-1B is most common after completing J-1 waiver requirements. EB-2 green cards work well for positions requiring advanced degrees. O-1 visas are possible for physicians with exceptional research achievements or leadership roles in maternal-fetal medicine societies. Academic positions often support multiple visa pathways.
Do employers commonly sponsor maternal-fetal medicine physicians?
Yes, especially academic medical centers and large hospital systems. The subspecialty's complexity and limited supply of trained physicians make employers willing to sponsor visas. Research-heavy positions at university hospitals have particularly strong sponsorship rates due to NIH funding and academic mission alignment.
Can I get sponsored while completing my fellowship?
Fellowship programs often provide institutional support for visa transitions, but employment-based sponsorship typically begins after fellowship completion. Coordinate with your program director about timing, especially if you're on a J-1 visa requiring a waiver. Some academic centers offer early employment discussions during your final fellowship year.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Maternal-Fetal Medicine Physician jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
